Please help us to raise money to get a wheelchair accessible van for this little miracle! Laurelyn's story below and a link to her facebook page.
August 28, 2012 our beautiful little miracle baby was born at only 23 weeks and weighing 1 lb 6.9 oz.
I was told several years ago that I would never be able to have children so you can imagine the shock when I went into the doctor with stomach pains and they told me I was pregnant! Laurelyn is my miracle baby! The night after my 23 week checkup I started having cramping and went into the ER. When my doctor got there she said I was dilated to a 4 and my mucus membrane was hanging out. I told the doctor that isn't right because I was only 23 weeks pregnant and I still had 4 more months to go. They sent me by ambulance to the Riverside/Amplatz hospital in Minneapolis where I had to lay without moving other than from side to side for as long as I could to avoid my water breaking. I made it 4 days before having my baby girl via emergency c-section! This little miracle was born weighing only 1 pound 6.9 ounces. Little did I know the challenges that would we would be facing. Within a week of her birth we were pulled into a room and asked to consider stopping all treatments as they felt we were doing more to her than for her. We refused to allow them to stop. We stood by her side and helped her fight! She was given a 10% chance of survival and we were told that IF she did survive, she would be a vegetable. We had no idea her journey would result in a 5 month NICU stay. We were by her side every day! Laurelyn came home at exactly 5 months old! A very long 154 days in the NICU. Laurelyn is now a beautiful 4 year old! She is always full of smiles! As she has grown over the last 4 years we would begin to see the damage her extreme prematurity caused to her little body. Laurelyn has been diagnosed with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, Chronic Lung Disease, IVH, Hydrocephalus, Epilepsy and now the beginning stages of scoliosis. These are just a few of her diagnosis. These diagnosis have affected her ability to crawl, sit up on her own and walk. She is also non verbal but loves to make lots of noises and has a giggle that is contagious! She has learned to scoot across the flooor and roll to wherever she wants to be. She is such a determined little girl!
Laurelyn has therapy twice a week and sees many specialists and these appointments require an hour drive one way. Laurelyn loves to go on car rides, travel and be outside but it is getting harder to get her in and out of vehicles. She is also getting her wheel chair to transport her but it is becoming extremely difficult to transport her with a wheelchair accessible van. We are trying to raise money to be able to get her the vehicle she needs so we are able to take her out more without having to worry about getting hurt trying to transport her. We greatly appreciate any and all donations and support!
