Finally, I am beginning to pursue my dream of educating and supporting individuals through the law. I have recruited, as a partner, my friend and colleague, Edward Kang. We are starting the Legal Empowerment Group.
The Legal Empowerment Group seeks to empower lower to middle income individuals through legal education and guidance. As social entrepreneurs, our vision is to arm the legally disenfranchised with knowledge, such that they become empowered as citizens. This, inevitably, shifts our culture into one by which individuals recognize their power to prevent injustice, poverty and break down any infrastructure that interferes with citizens’ basic human needs being met.
A transformation in society is required in order to create “justice for all”. We believe that the traditional practice of law is only one side of the scales of justice. On the other is the participation of all citizens acting on their own behalf with consciousness of its affects on society as a whole. We strive, through education, mentoring and access to resources, to help individuals recognize their value and role in making society better for themselves and others.
Our business provides lower to middle income communities with the tools to find their own voice within society through:
Legal education courses in the community;
Pro se litigant advice and consultation, bringing understanding and resolutions one's own legal problems;
Mentoring young people, under 21, interested in serving the public's good;
Legal representation
Services include:
Adult legal education classes at community-based centers and organizations
High School legal classes and Summer programs
Youth and young adult mentoring
Web-based legal education videos
Providing legal advice and training to community organizations’ personel and clients
Limited representation
Quality-based referrals
Continuing Legal Education (CLEs) for Attorneys
In court representation for Legal Areas which impact people's livelihood:
*Landlord-Tenant (Residential and Commerical),
*Family (Custody, PFA, Guardianship),
*Immigration,
*Family Planning (Wills, Power of Attorney, etc), *Employment,
*Property (Tangled title, Ejectment defense);
*Small claims dispute (limited)
*Some employment related issues
