The Ledfords Hit With Two Tragedies

$49,655 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 438 people in 12 months
On July 26th, 2018 my sister Kristen Dawson Ledford was airlifted from Haywood Medical Center in Waynesville, North Carolina to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in South Carolina diagnosed with an aggressive case of Bacterial Meningitis. It was determined the bacteria entered her system through an ear infection she had been battling.  As of today, August 9th, she remains in a coma.  My sister Kristen is the loving mother of two young children Rylie age 9 & Grayson age 5. Together with her husband James, they lived a simple life in the hills surrounding Waynesville, North Carolina. With simple means, they lived in a rental house they’ve made their own. With what they lacked in means, they made up with love. The four of them are inseparable, and now tragedy has struck their lives.  It’s been two weeks now, and Kristen remains unresponsive.  With her family by her side, her doctors are not giving up hope for improvement.

To make matters worse, last night, August 8th, as rains continue to fall in Western North Carolina, a massive tree fell on their home making it uninhabitable. They are now homeless. While their mother lays in bed unaware, her two children and husband face another setback. They need help. They need housing.  I'm starting this page because people have been calling me and asking "what can I do?"  As someone who has always tried to help organizations and causes in my community, I am now asking the community for help back.  Any help you can give will help us secure a temporary rental for James and the children, pay medical bills that will mount and bring some sense of normalcy back to my niece and nephew's lives.  I leave this in your hands, the reader, to give what you can.  This tragedy has reminded me that family is first.  If there is any silver lining to this dreadful story, it's inspired me to be more present in my family's lives.  Let this be a lesson for all of us.  God bless.  Thank you.

Hello all,

I'd like to thank everyone for their support over the last 30 days. Rylie and Grayson are in school. James has returned to work. My mother is settling in with her new normal. Unfortunately my father remains in rehabilitation in Maggie Valley. He continues to struggle with a blood infection, he still needs your prayers too.

For those who have asked, we plan on holding a memorial service for those family and friends that were unable to attend in North Carolina. Details to follow.

On behalf of the Ledford and Dawson Families we thank you.

All the Best,

Ryan Dawson

This morning's service was beautiful. The priest, who is 87, lost his father at 5 years old. He was able to speak directly to Rylie and Grayson about the loss of a parent. It was very touching. He wasn't allowed to attend his Father's service because his family said he was too young....so being their for your mother's goodbye is a blessing. The children will appreciate that one day.

The GoFundMe set up for my sister's family not only will help financially, but it's been therapeutic. My family has been overwhelmed with the show of support and lobe. Unfortunately my sister Kristen never thought she had the love she had. Many times she felt she faced her challenges alone. Her husband James changed all that. A total stranger from Washington State who saw the go fund me page on Facebook sent me this screen shot of my sister Facebook from 2015. Even while struggling herself she always had it in her to help others. She said "we don't have a lot of money, but I hope others would do the same for us." Kristen.....they have! We love you and look forward to having you look over us when you decide it's time. Thank you each and every one of you. Ryan (Kristen's Big Brother).

It's with a heavy heart to let everyone know that on Wednesday we decided as a family my sister would not want to live with the challenges her brain injury would have left her. She was removed from life support Wednesday evening. There wasn't a doubt in anyones mind. She is comfortable and at peace. Today, along with a counselor who specializes in children grieving, her children saw her for the first time in three weeks. No tubes, no machines and just looking like shes sleeping. This counselor is an angel. The children are devastated but are excited to know they will see their mother in heaven. We didn't say goodbye, we said "see you soon" which one day we will. I want to thank everyone who had supported us over the last three weeks. Your prayers will be needed for this family for years to come. Melinda Harrington Dawson and I have committed ourselves to be their guardian angels and help her husband James with his long road ahead. Rylie and Grayson are currently with their mother, in the end that's exactly how my sister would want it. They are making art with hand prints and giving their mother one last hug and final message before she takes her journey. All Kristen's brothers are here to see her off. I will let everyone know when Kristen decides to leave us. In the meantime shes waiting for her que from her Grandparents, Uncle Chuck & Uncle John.
