Many of you know Linda Kaiser the ultra-endurance athlete. Her achievements are astounding. Linda is the first and only woman to swim all 9 Hawaiian channels, she completed over 50 marathons (several under 4 hours) and 10 ultra marathons in a 20 year period. She is also a member of the Hawaii Swimming Hall of Fame and 2014 she was inducted into the Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame.
Believe it or not, the most impressive thing about Linda is not her ahievements. It is the heart and soul she puts into helping others push their own limits and complete their goals. She will help you with your swim stroke or pick you up from the back roads of Waimanalo with a flat tire, no questions asked. Linda has hosted the Kaiwi Channel swimmers for years, regularly navigating them out of the water at 2:00AM. No matter the issue or situation, Linda is always the first one to help.
Now Linda needs our help!!! She has a very rare and serious form of lung cancer called SYNOVIAL SARCOMA. Only .5% of all tumors fall into this category. The tumor is so large, it has pushed her right lung to a quarter of the size of her left lung. It is a very rare tumor, never found in the lungs and mostly found in soft connective tissue in males under the age of 25. It is a STAGE 4 cancer and it is inoperable. Therefore she will have to go through very intense chemotherapy. We all know how tough Linda is, yet this will likely be her toughest endurance challenge.
Linda is self-employed and won't be able to handle the rigors of her profession as she tackles her chemo protocol. Her treatment begins on May 8th. The treatment plan will consist of 4-5 days in the hopspital while recieving 2 types of chemotherapy drugs. Once discharged she will be home to rest and get ramped up for the next round 21 days later. Her protocol will go on for 3 rounds like this and then she will have a CT scan to see the progress she and her team has made. This treatment plan can only continue for 6-8 rounds before it starts to take its toll on ones heart.
Linda refused serveral times even the suggestion of asking for financial help. "that is not how I was raised" she has rebuffed. However, the reality is she needs our help and we are asking our friends, the entire sports community and anyone willing to lend a hand, now is the time!
