Support Literacy Needs in Baltimore

Learning Is For Tomorrow Needs Your Help!

Learning Is For Tomorrow (LIFT) is a community-based nonprofit adult literacy organization located in Baltimore City, Maryland. LIFT has been providing  services to Baltimore City residents since 1988.  LIFT provides adult literacy instruction, technology training, and life skills instruction to adults who have not received a high school diploma or who have limited literacy abilities.  LIFT serves over 300 adult learners per year.

The majority of LIFT students face many barriers to learning. These challenges include learning disabilities, physical challenges, persistent mental illness, and intellectual disabilities.  These are in addition to the many barriers caused by poverty.  LIFT also offers specialized classes for learners who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and those who are Blind/Low-Vision.  Many learners are referred to us from other literacy providers, service agencies, and community colleges.

LIFT is now facing the most difficult challenge in our 29-year history.  Due to shifts in funding, LIFT has had to drastically reduce the number of classes and services we have traditionally offered.  This means that there are fewer adults in Baltimore City receiving desperately-needed adult literacy instruction.

Losing an organization such as LIFT will have an immediate and damaging impact on the lives of citizens that are already the most vulnerable.
Those students who require the type of unique instructional services LIFT offers will no longer be served, and other literacy providers and partner agencies will have no place to refer these individuals.

This is a tremendous blow to a city where the literacy need already greatly outweighs the available services:
--98,000 Baltimore city residents require literacy services; however, current providers only have the capacity to serve approximately 4,000 residents per year.
--In LIFT’s zip code alone,  over 4,000 residents are currently in need of adult education services.
--More than 40% of LIFT's neighbors (25 and older) without a high school diploma live in poverty.

YOUR CONTRIBUTION ALLOWS US TO RESTORE OUR DIVERSE CLASS OPTIONS AND ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF MORE ADULT LEARNERS.

Thank you for your generosity and support.  Please contact us with any questions and visit our website (www.liftbaltimore.org) to learn more about our organization and services .  THANK YOU!

From our learners:
"LIFT is all about making sure you get your education. ...In the past I used drugs and I found the way out of that life.  I am back on my feet!  Class at LIFT can be a challenge, but it motivates you to be a better and stronger person."
                                                                    --Sherry C., C1 class

"I went to several schools but I never felt like I learned very much.  All that changed when I came to LIFT.  I am now receiving an education like I never have before.  I now have a chance to reach my goal of getting my GED. ...LIFT is a great thing for students and gives them the skills to be successful in life.  My classmates and I don't judge each other -- we help each other out."
                                                                      --Zane F., B4 class

"I am a student here because I do not know how to read.  My goal is to learn how to read, so I can do things like going to the bank and reading my mail on my own.  I don't want to keep depending on other people."
                                                                   --Bintou S., A1 class
