A letter from Charming Charles:

My name is Charles. I've had a tough time up til' now, but believe me, I'm a fighter. I was skin and bones when I came out of AC, weighing closer to 4 pounds than 5. With a lot of care, rest, fluids, and all the yummy food I can eat I'm now up to 7 pounds. I had all sorts of health issues which once I visited a nice lady vet and had some blood taken, she found out that all my troubles were related to a long term untreated thyroid disease. She prescribed a little pill which I didn't mind taking at all. Everyday I would take half a pill in food twice a day and eat it up. Within 3 weeks my followup blood work showed that the medicine had corrected my thyroid disease and I was looking and feeling so much better. I overheard my foster mom talking about how great I was doing and I was going to be ready to go for adoption soon. I was over the moon with excitement, thinking how my dream of
having a family and home of my own might actually come true. I was hoping maybe whoever adopted me would have a dog I could be friends with. I've spent my entire life lonely and neglected and I so crave affection. I purr constantly and just want to converse with someone that cares. Oh, there I go rambling on. Anyway, things were moving along well and then suddenly on week 4 after starting the thyroid medication I had a terrible reaction to the drug. Chunks of my hair fell out because I was so uncomfortable and was licking and scratching. I'm told this sometimes happens and I happen to be the unlucky one where I won't be able to take the very medicine that can save my life. So now the lady vet is telling me I need to have the alternative treatment ASAP before my untreated thyroid deteriorates again and I start regressing. I need
to go to a special animal hospital where they will inject a radioactive iodine into my little body and I stay there for 3-5 days until most of the radioactive material leaves my body. This injection will actually correct my thyroid disorder so I won't have to worry about it in the future. So I suppose even though I'm unlucky to be allergic to the medication, I'm very lucky to have this other treatment option. And even better news, my kidneys are working well, which makes me a good candidate for the treatment. I can have the treatment next week, but I heard that's it costs a lot of money. So, my paws are crossed that someone out there believes I'm worth it and will help me be able to have it.
