Kidney to Australia

Donation protected
Nick's sister-in-law has spent years battling kidney failure and after her first donated kidney failed her recently, she was facing months of dialysis before even being able to join the donor list in Australia where she lives. Nick decided to undergo tests here in the UK to see if he was a possible match for donating a kidney to his wife's sister. Once the NHS and Australian health service established that he was a likely donor match, Nick was faced with a life-altering decision to travel to Australia to undergo further tests and if all was successful, donate a kidney, which he decided to do in July 2019.

The surgery has been a great success with both Nick and his sister-in-law recuperating at her home in Sydney. For the first time in months, if not years, she can now finally say she is feeling herself again and thanks to Nicks' huge sacrifice, she will hopefully have another healthy 20-25 years ahead of her before needing further treatment.

In an ideal scenario, the surgeons would have liked to see Nick recuperate for 12 weeks after his surgery before flying home, to avoid DVT and other post-op risks during the lengthy flight. Nick is a teacher in Stockton-on-Tees and has forfeited a week of salary, his summer break and his family holiday in order to fly to Australia to undergo surgery. Nick will be flying home at the end of August, just 4 weeks after the successful surgery, since he would otherwise have to forfeit another 2 months of salary once the schools go back which, for the sake of his family here, he cannot do.

Since this is classed as an elective surgery and his sister-in-law is an ex-pat, he is not entitled to sick pay from work and the health services cannot cover his costs. Only thanks to his parents-in-law was he able to pay the £1500 to fly to Australia at short notice.

Nick's wish now would be to be in a position to repay his in-laws for the flight so anything you can give to help would be a huge help. Of course Nick has sacrificed more than most of us can imagine already, but it is testament to his nature that he doesn't want them to be out of pocket.

We, his family, would also like to be able to make his return flight to the UK as comfortable and safe as possible. If we can raise over and above the £1500 to repay his in-laws, we would like to put this towards upgrading Nick to a lay flat bed so that he can lie down and have more space to move around to help combat the risk of DVT; or to recoup his lost salary. We will speak to Emirates ourselves, but if anyone has experience of upgrading tickets in exceptional circumstances such as these, that would be a huge help.

Any further money raised will be split between www.kidneyresearchuk.org (Kidney Research UK is a registered charity no. 252892) and https://kidney.org.au/  (ABN: 37008464426).

Anything you can give to give this wonderful, life changing story an even greater ending would be gratefully received.

A heartfelt thank you from Nick's family.
