MY SONS STORY
What a fighter, since day one!! Being born with a congenital heart defect wasn’t going to stop my sons presence on this earth!! He was born with a condition called Transposition of the Greater Vessels!! He’s had 7 heart surgeries, but that wasn’t going to stop his level of activity!! My son has always proved people and doctors and nurses wrong, and always proved me right!! We know as mothers our children, and we help guide them as a way of their experience!! My son has character, he’s defined at 6 years old, he know what he wants and even if he can’t verbalize it, he knows how and what he has to do to get what ever it is that he desires!! He’s always fused his way through life, that’s part of what makes him the fighter he is.
On May 14, 2018 boy Was Kayden living his best life!! He’s was accompanied by me of course, his Mother Shaina. His two older brothers Krystian 7 and Kayon 13 (his birthday being just on Mother’s Day the 13) I had taken the boys on a family trip!! The first one by plane for the youngest of my two, we had flown from St. Louis to Orlando!! My kids love water and I was prepared and had everything in store for them!! Disney, then Staying at this awesome hotel resort!! Then we’d make our way down to Miami for more summer fun, I had everything planned out!!
After Enjoying a full day at Disney’s water park we ate and headed back to the hotel, where my kids actually let me rest unbothered, I couldn’t believe it. After napping it was time to enjoy the benefits of the hotel pool so we all went for a swim!! It was a perfect end to a unforeseen rainy day (it’s about the only thing I hadn’t prepared for) my Children where having a blast!! Running around enjoying themselves!! Like I’m sitting in the jacuzzi, my kids running back and forth. It was literally perfect!! I had accomplished my goal!! My kids were happy I mean the type of happy that makes it worth me raising these boys on my own!!
May 13th my son nearly drowned in that pool!! I don’t know how it happened, it was likely that my son got submerged under the water from passing out due to his cardiac issue and being in the extreme heat of the Jacuzzi. (Because it can cause you to get dehydrated fast and cause you to get dizzy) He was literally running around with his head cut off he was having so much fun. The man that pull my son out of the water pulled him out of water that he could stand up in! I’ll never forget the lady saying to me, your son your son and her husband pulling his lifeless body out of that water!! It took them 10 minutes to get his heart back beating my son was lethargic he was hypothermic and holding onto dear life. It seem like forever for the paramedics to show up!! Me and his brothers were scared and completely freaking out I’ve never saying something that awful in my life especially something that happened so fast out of nowhere. My son was rushed to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando Florida where he stayed in critical condition!! My son suffered a major Anoxic Brain injury from being submerged under the water for what we believe was anywhere from 45 seconds to two minutes. I cannot explain to you the overwhelming amount of pain my son is currently in and has been through since that dat. He is currently still in the hospital in intensive care. My son suffered a lung injury from being submerged in the water, he suffered a brain injury, his heart had a dangerously in regular and abnormal rhythm to it from nearly drowning!! When he first came in the hospital none of the doctors believed he was going to make it through the night!! My son is currently in a vegetative state, he has not currently shown us any signs of awareness but I believe that my son is in that body because something is keeping him alive. My son has been suffering from withdrawal from the major narcotics they had to put him on to even keep him alive which consist of sweating, throwing up, fevers, pain, convulsing. He’s also been neurostorming a condition of the brain that happens when the brain has been deprived of oxygen!! He has not gained his awareness. He currently does not have the ability to follow simple commands, follow us by use of his eyes, squeeze our hand on command. He has not shown us that he can swallow, talk, walk. He’s been having involuntary movements, today he got an Feeding tube in to hopefully aid in his recovery and reducing the risk of aspiration!! My sons will need full time rehabilitation for possibly the rest of his life but that will be predicated on his level of awareness!! I’ve been praying and working with him every day to see if he responds to me.
We have been in Orlando Florida almost a month, the insurance is giving us grief about paying for the medical transportation for us to bring him home and I know more then I know anything, in my sons recovery he needs to be home to St. Louis!! Closer to my Parents, his brothers, my family!! It has been a nightmare my two other kids being in St. Louis, and me being states away in Florida!! Every thing in our life has changed and all from a place of good intent me wanting to show my kids more!! That’s there’s more outside of St. Louis!! This is a tragic accident that I hope no parent has to face on a family trip or in the luxury of their own home

I never felt in a thousand years that something so good could go so wrong. The best joy as a mother is being in the bliss of enjoying watching her kids be happy!! I planned this for weeks. I literally felt as though my weeks of planning and Preparation I had accomplished my goal. I did all by myself, I felt like a soccer mom. “A real parent” whatever that means. My Life has been shattered in a way where I have no choice but to pick up the pieces for my other two kids that are watching me. I am their example I am Who they look to for safety security and reassurance that everything will be OK. Not only did Kayden suffer a trauma, my other two children had to watch their baby brother be brought back to life. They are struggling trying to understand how their brother could be sleep with his eyes open. Why when they talk to him on face time he doesn’t respond. Why he has to be in the wheelchair!! It’s not about me but the amount of guilt and grief I feel I will never get over, but what I do want to do in sharing my experiences is being awareness to everyone!! I never want someone to feel like I feel!! How can you intend to do something right and it turn horribly wrong!! I mean this is the best holly spirit I possess but I really F*uC**d this up!! This is effort moving forward to gracefully make the best out of this situation and help as many people as I can!! My sons struggle will not be in vain.
MY MISSION AND COMMITMENT TO MY SON
bring awareness to pool safety and put forth preventative measures to ensure that home, and vacation pool safety is held to a higher standard.
Partner with local, and major chain hotels that have pools commit to housing at least 5 to 10 youth size swimming vest in the event that no lifeguard can be on hand. That in the event no lifeguard Can’t physically be there that parents and children have the resources available to swim safely.
Long-term goal.. get a petition started to change the liability and responsibility On the part of hotel chains!! I want a law to pass that every hotel and resort hotel that has a pool that children are accessible to have a mandatory lifejackets on hand and visible and accessible for use at any time. This should be a FREE accommodation to hotels in conjunction with visibly noticeable signs of age requirements and restrictions on Jacuzzis Saunas and Pools!! It’s not enough to assume that we are just going to read the fine print. But we know if we see lifejackets visible and we have the understanding of the limitations of our children, and even the fear children have associated with water and pools, we all know if we can see a life vest we will be more likely to use it and prevent accidents from accruing in the future!!
I would like to purchase swimming vest in Kaydens name available for me to give and donate in honor of his accident and preventing future ones to kids who do not have the resources to buy one!!
I firmly believe that nothing happens for no reason, and with everyone’s help I can put something together for these children to feel safe in the water!! I believe that this is an achievable and realistic goal and the only way that this can be done is for it to be shared and spread!! I hope that this can reach even major vendors of swim vest that might be willing to donate to me for this cause!!
