Katie, my daughter n law, desperately wanted to protect her unborn baby from the dangerous medication that she was advised was possible the cause for her miscarriage three years prior. Katie has epilepsy. After her first miscarriage, Katie’s mom informed her many children with epelipsy have been helped with cannabis. Katie decided to try it. She was pleased to see her seizure had been reduced from two to three a week to one small seizure a month. Katie was pregnant once again in April 2014. Katie stopped smoking when she found out she was pregnant. Her seizures started back and were more severe. She had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance several times. Her OB/GYN and neurologist advised her she would have to increase her seizure medication. She was very concerned and ask, will the medication hurt the baby. Her doctors advised her they were aware the medications have been associated with birth defects, but her seizure could cause death to her and the baby and she is at high risk of falling and hurting herself and the baby. Having overwhelming concerns Katie researched the seizure medication compared to cannabis. She found epilepsy medication has been known for causing such birth defect as spina bifida, cleft palate, hypospadias, club foot, mental delays and developmental issues. Some of the research Katie found, stated, as much as a 40% increase in birth defect born to mother taking anti seizure medication. She found the studies against marijuana stated, cannabis can cause low birth rate, it may be related to new born irritability, but no known birth defects. The site effects of the cannabis were very mild. When compared to the seizure medication it was clear cannabis was the safest choice. Katie made the difficult decision to start back smoking. She did not have any more seizures through out her pregnacy. She had Will on December 25, 2014. He was perfectly healthy baby boy, 7 pounds 7 ounces. He was truly a gift from God. Without notifying Katie or ask for permission, without any valid reason the hospital conducted a drug screen on Katie and Will. They both tested positive for cannabinoid. Without a warrant, and even though Will had no ill effects, the hospital notified the local authorities , DHR and Sherriff’s department. On January 7, 2015 the sheriff’s department showed up at Katie’s home and arrested her. Only two days after being in Jail and the nurse giving her the seizure medication Katie had a severe seizure and she had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. We were notified by the Jail nurse, but we were not able to have any contact with her. Katie remainedin jail for seven days, until we could come up with her $7,500 bond. Katie was charged with chemical child endangerment. She could be sent to prison for 1 to 10 years. Katie’s defense is expected to cost $15,000. Katie is on disability and cannot afford this defense. Katie can fight these charges if she receives the proper defense. I am asking for everyone’s support.
