It's been a very long, anxiety filled journey trying to decide what was best for Junior our 7 year old American Pit Bull Terrier and our 4 month old beautiful baby boy, Jackson. Like any parent you want to make sure that your baby is safe at all times. We have been back and forth on this topic for several months and have tried to find a good home for Junior but nothing has come up and no one has reached out. We are so thankful and appreciative to everyone who has tried to spread the word and help us.
We refuse to give up on our dog and refuse to surrender him to a shelter for fear that they may put him down. He is an amazing dog and does not deserve that fate. My husband, Rob found Junior wandering the streets close to starving and took him in a few years ago. Junior was close to 20 lbs and you could see almost every bone in his body. He acquired possessive tendencies due to the fact that he had to probably fight for every scrap of food he found. He is aggressive toward other dogs because he probably had to fight them to survive. THIS IS NOT A BREED ISSUE. I cannot stress that enough. Pit Bull terriers used to be known as the nanny dog because they were so good with children. He is only possessive and aggressive because of the time he had to fend for himself. He loves people. Nothing makes him happier than being around people. He thinks he is a small dog and cannot control himself when he gets excited, no matter how many times we try to train him ourselves.
He is fiercly loyal and loves us to death. In the beginning he had some jealousy issues when Jackson came into the picture but now loves him and sleeps in front of his room protecting him. He licks his feet and cheeks and sleeps besides him making sure he is always in sight. He chases our cats and play fights with our little dog.
Our child comes first but we cannot give up on our dog. I have reached out to many trainers and some classify him as a lost cause and a liability just because of his breed. We will prove them wrong. I found one trainer who believes he can change his behavior and specializes in the breed. Because he displays possessive and aggressive characteristics he believes it would be best to take him for a minimum of 2 weeks where he would be trained 24/7 and would not release him back to us until he completely believes he is 100% safe to be around Jackson. He would then come in monthly to make sure we are still keeping up with his training and he is still doing well, and remembering we are his pack leader and he is the submissive one. The only issue is that this whole program is costly. It would cost $2,000 for this but he guarentees he can change his behavior and send us back a reformed and delightful Junior! We have to try and give this a shot but we need your help! With a new baby and daycare expenses we need help with affording this program. This can save his life. We cannot keep Junior if he does not go through this intensive program. We have to make sure he is 100% safe to be around a baby who will surely be grabbing his toys, his tail and his cheeks.
Please help us give this a try! We appreciate anything anyone can donate. Thank you for believing in Junior, our little monster!
