Chuck Mindenhall's piece on Jason Thacker and his livelihood tells a sad story of an individual dealt a bad hand in the fallout of arguably mixed martial arts' greatest turning point, The Ultimate Fighter Season One.

While Thacker may or may not have been suitably qualified to perform on the show, the details of his treatment in the aftermath speak to the unfortunate ways that some people treat one another.

Without a car, a phone, or a friend, Jason now dedicates his life to supporting his unwell family.

Together, let's make a small gesture to someone in their time of need, and demonstrate the respect for our fellow man/woman that martial arts has represented since its inception.

Chuck Mindenhall's excellent long piece, 'IN SEARCH OF STRANGE BREW...' can be found here:

Hello everyone. After a lengthy process of withdrawing funds and sending them to Jason's home in BC, I am delighted to announce that the check and fan messages made it to Jason safe and sound as of yesterday.

Please find embedded with this update a video uploaded by Jason expressing gratitude for all the support sent his way.

Thank you to all who have contributed to the campaign. It is a great testament to the generous spirit inherent in the MMA community.

Kind regards,

An update for the final day:

Thank you all for your support in this campaign to raise donations for Jason Thacker and his family. I have attached my thoughts in the video embedded below, as well a picture of the printed messages from fans for Jason.

The GoFundMe campaign will remain open until tomorrow morning, upon which I will start the process of acquiring and sending a donations check to Jason with the help of Chuck Mindenhall, via secured mail.

GoFundMe takes seven days to process and dispatch the check and I will inform all of its arrival here and once I have sent it on to Jason.

For updates on the donation transfer process, or relevant questions, follow me at @AidanOConnor, or visit the blog section of www.AidanOConnor.info.

The highest donor, and winner of Chris Rini's woodwork piece giveaway, will be contacted for mailing details to receive their gift.

Many thanks,

Aidan O'Connor

An update for day ten:

Chuck Mindenhall and I have discussed the best means of delivering donations to Jason. Provisionally, I will request a check from GoFundMe - made out to Jason Thacker - at the conclusion of the campaign on Friday which, according to the company website, will take seven days to receive. Upon receipt of the check I will send it via secure delivery to Jason with the help of Chuck,

Over 100 positive messages have been sent Jason's way from people in the MMA community. These are being compiled into a single document to send to Jason along with donations. If you would like to offer him any encouraging messages, feel free to send them via GoFundMe's private message function, the comments section, or Twitter, for inclusion.

Further to the campaign, Chris Rini - the illustrator of Chuck's editorial and a woodwork artist who has created many MMA themed pieces - has pledged to give away the original woodwork used to illustrate Chuck's editorial to the highest donor, free of charge.

The campaign will continue until tomorrow afternoon (04/03), when we will begin the process of transferring the donations to Jason and his family. Now that Jason is onboard, I encourage everyone to share the link to this page so we can make the biggest difference possible.

Many thanks,

Aidan

An update for day nine:

Over 100 positive messages have been sent Jason's way from people in the MMA community. These are being compiled into a single document to send to Jason along with donations. If you would like to offer him any encouraging messages, feel free to send them via GoFundMe's private message function, the comments section, or Twitter, for inclusion.

News of the campaign also made it to Ariel Helwani's The MMA Hour podcast, where the fundraiser was brought up in the show's fan questions segment. A big thank you for the mention.

As alluded to previously, contact with Jason Thacker has been established and he will gratefully accept donations. With Jason's blessing, this is now an official
fundraiser. The campaign will continue until this coming Friday afternoon (04/03), when we will begin transferring the donations to Jason and his family. Now that Jason is onboard, I encourage everyone to share the link to this page so we can make the biggest difference possible.

Further to the campaign, Chris Rini - the illustrator of Chuck's editorial and a woodwork artist who has created many MMA themed pieces - has pledged to give away the original woodwork used to illustrate Chuck's editorial to the highest donor, free of charge. Chris elaborates on this initiative in the video accompanying this update.

Chuck Mindenhall is currently awaiting confirmation from Jason on his preferred means of receiving donations. Options that have been presented include check, PayPal, bank transfer and directly via GoFundMe. Whichever method Jason chooses, we hope to have him confirm receipt of the donations via a photo, video, or written message; as long as he is comfortable doing so.

Many thanks

Men who try, and fail, might find themselves mocked or scorned by the larger group of nobodies who will never attempt anything meaningful in their lives, but they always earn the respect of other do'ers. You are in the brotherhood of do'ers. Entry is exclusive, reserved only for those tiny handful of men who are driven by an inner disquiet to test themselves in big ways. You share a common ground with all the great ones, that the bitter sideline nobodies will never comprehend. Whether or not you reached the summit is immaterial, when the question being asked is, how do you fill the blank space of your life before the final page turns? For those bitter and sad types whose lives never gain any proximity to achievement, they fill their pages lamely criticizing those who do. I want you to know that for every turd you encountered who gave you a hard time, for every back-biter, for every smack talker or critic, there is a do'er out there who is cut from a vastly superior cloth, who views what you did and, with a nod, acknowledges you as one of us. You have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.

I wonder how this works as far as taxes and stuff, i know go fund takes a small % and then there is Canadian tax, when it's all said and done just wonder how much of this is actually going to Jason, I hope he is able to buy himself a reliable car. So proud of everyone who donated to this good cause, i've payed close attention to it everyday, So very happy for Jason. Sad Dana and them never cared enough to donate. After that comment by Mauro Ranallo about Jason i'm happy to see he manned up and donated , more of a man than Dana will ever be, lost a lot of respect for Dana over the last couple years

You are a true warrior Jason. I truly hated hearing about your hardships following TUF, and unfortunately terrible situations often happen to great people. Know that you have fans out there that feel deeply for you, and we take care of our own. Keep fighting brother, you are truly an inspiration to those who have difficulty overcoming the challenges life throws at them

You had the courage to attempt to become a professional mixed martial artist back before most people even knew what a mixed martial artist was. It didn't go well for you on the show (partly because your training and skill set was far behind many of the other contestants on the show and partly because many of the guys on the show were complete jerks), but it looked to me like you really gave it your all, despite the bad situation on the show. I believe you were honestly selected to lose, as most of the guys on the show were already on the verge of being in the UFC and you weren't on that level yet. But many people would be too afraid to attempt what you did - to step into a cage a fight a professional mixed martial artist at the highest level of the sport. Your courage and humble demeanor made me a fan. Also, I respect how you are trying your best to take care your family, despite your own struggles. I know that social anxiety and depression can be very difficult, so I wish both you and your family the best. You have more fans and supporters out there than you know because of your humility, courage, and kind heart.

Jason, first off man I really wish you genuine friendship. I also hope you can let go of the pain from this horrible crap. It is poison. Growing up I was the dorky kid into Magic the Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons, horror movies and punk rock. I did NOT fit in man, haha. I look back now, and I'm proud I didn't fit in. You should be too. It took more balls for you to do what you did than any of them. I admire your inner strength Brother, keep your chin high.

Aidan Please make sure Strange Brew gets this comment. Jason I just wanted to say i'm so sorry that the fall out of the show did that to your life. I saw your video on youtube, the workout video and it had some fight highlights on it too. you looked good man, some good knees, As far as the ultimate fighter goes , you took a shot at somethin great and it didn't work out the way you would have liked, no shame in that, . You took a risk many would have been afraid of, You trained with some of the greatest fighters of all time, you went one on one with the crippler , man that takes guts, Do you know how many guys have one dream, to finally get a shot to fight in the octagon, you did it man, you got your ufc fight, that means a lot if you ask me. be proud Jason Don't let others jealousy bring you down, you have a lot of courage. Don't let them take your spirit .I can relate to your story Jason, I have bad anxiety problems, really no close friends and I use to take meds that i no longer take . I know how hard it can be , Idk if anyone can relate to your story as much as i can. I know you have had a lot of bad luck, lot of things that just didn't work out or go your way and people haven't treated you the way you deserve but hey man like the song says " I get knocked down but i get up again, you're never gonna keep me down" Lets both start living . I hope you realize how many of us are rooting for you and truly admire you . Only a strong person could endure what you have been through. I've added somethin to my bucket list, someday i'd love to buy Strange Brew a drink and listen to his stories about his killer of sheep days. Best of luck my brother, from a life long fan, Paul.
