I am Kerry Anne O'Connor, English Representative for Animal Rescue Nyander Guard. I live in Japan and have volunteered with this animal shelter since the March 11, 2011 triple disaster that occurred in East Japan.

Nyander Guard  has saved over 1000 animals since the meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. There are still animals trapped in the exclusion zones that need to be saved. Nyander Guard enters these highly radiated  zones regularly for feeding runs and rescue missions. The rescued animals are brought back to the shelter where they are vaccinated, dewormed and brought back to healthy conditions.  All of the animals are spayed or neutered before being placed in a new home.  This takes an enormous amount of time and money. Unfortunately, those that were rescued right after the meltdown are dying.  It is our wish that these abandoned pets have some happiness during their remaining lives. Our main goal now is to find forever homes for these senior animals.

However, with no government or corporate funding in Japan, maintaining the shelter and continuing the rescue missions has become more and more difficult. Funds are drying up, volunteers have decreased and media coverage had disappeared. Nyander Guard needs your help to keep the shelter running and continue their relentless work.

Donations will go directly to the shelter via paypal and will be used for veterinary expenses, housing utilities, live-in staff salaries, rescue missions and pet food. Donate today!
Thank you!

Update 23

I know it has been awhile for an update. First, we want to say prayers for all the victims (inclucing animals ) in the California fires. We hope that all the victims and animals have been rescued or evacuated. Knowing about the probable radiation contamination in Simi Valley from the Santa Susana Field Lab strikes close to home.

And......we`d like to announce that our rescue cat, Dottie, who was found wandering around 1 mile from the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant in 6/2017 has found her forever home!! We never give up! There are still 130 cats at the shelter hoping for the same destiny as Dottie. Until then, we still need donations to help maintain the shelter.

Another update: Nyander Guard has been officially registered as a spay/neuter clinic for the Japan Animal Foundation! More news to come!!

Nyander Guard will be doing another spay/neuter clinic on August 2, 2018. This time they were approached by a neighborhood committee asking for help with a cat hoarder. Apparently, the hoarder was lonely due her family being evacuated far away after the Fukushima meltdown. She took comfort in the stray cats that were roaming in the area and the number of cats grew to 50!! Another sad case related to the 2011 Tohoku disaster. Nyander Guard will be planning more and more clinics to help curb this overgrown population problem in Fukushima, but they need your donations. Please help!!

This is Pucchi. She came to the shelter in 2014 and finally found her forever home. We still have over 100 cats that haven’t been as lucky as Pucchi. The adult cats that were rescued in 2011 are now aging and we have started losing a few. These animals have been through so much already and we desperately wish for some kind of happiness for them before they cross the Rainbow Bridge. Please donate now to help us in our efforts.

On May 24th, Nyander Guard was successful in spaying and neutering 38 cats in their TNR program. Though they barely have enough funds to keep the shelter running but still feel responsible for managing the stray cats in and around the local areas. Nyander Guard, 30 miles from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant , still continues feeding runs and rescues inside the exclusion zones. Their last rescue was in November 2017. There are still animals inside the zone that need your help. Please donate now!
