This boy named Mahendra is 12 years-old. He is very intelligent but has been ill his whole life and lives in a remote poor village in India where there is no medical attention available. Mahendra has never been able to hold his head up and needs constant attention by his family for his daily living needs as his whole body is frail and his muscles are very weak and malnourished. His parents have tried to get medical help for him his whole life but have lacked the money needed to even travel to a proper hospital.
In May of 2015, I sent Mahendra $500 so he could travel with his family to a hospital in Delhi where he stayed for several days getting examined and tested by several specialists. These doctors concluded that they could perform surgery so that Mahendra will be able to hold his head up with a 95% success rate promised. However, he will have to stay in the hospital for three months. During this time he is required to have one parent with him at all times. He also has to pay for his own transportation which requires long over night train rides for him and his parents.
It has been determined that all these expenses can be covered for $4,000 U.S. which is a fortune to this family who has no money. Also, India does not have anything like a Ronald McDonald House or other charity that is set up to help them.
They do finally have a young doctor who has volunteered all of his time for free and he is working very hard to make this dream come true for Mahendra and his family. This Dr. received the $500 from me and made all the arrangements and paid all the expenses for this boy to get preliminary medical care. He travelled with them and stayed with them to make sure they had good treatment and he was the family advocate with all the doctors seeing Mahendra.
Now he will make all the arrangements again for the planned surgery on July 5th, 2015. However, travel, food and lodging in the most affordable way possible will still require $4,000 for the three month hospital stay. Therefore I am setting up this Go Fund Me page to help them. 100% of all the money I receive will go straight to India and directly to paying these medical expenses. I will also match the first $500 donated to this deserving family with another $500 from me.
Those that know me well may be aware that I have travel to India four times. The last three trips included helping a family with many needs at 100% of my own expense - a roof with stairs for access by the mother, a motorcycle for family transportation (five people previously had one bicycle to share) and high school and college expenses for two boys (one who will graduate college this July! I have also provided a doctor and all needed medications on three occasions for an entire village with no access to any medical care. However, in this case the need is in excess of my ability to help alone. Especially because this is needed in a hurry. That is why I am asking you to help me now.
Lastly, I have checked on the progress of this case very carefully, reviewed all the doctor reports, and verified that all the money collected will be used to help this boy. If 35 people give $100 each the full expense will be covered and this family will be grateful beyond description. However, if you can give even a small amount it will help make this surgery and recovery possible for Mahendra.
Thank you for reading this and for helping by forwarding this to anyone else that you think might be able to help. A mother and father who have been such good parents to keep this child alive for 12 years will be forever in your debt. Also, Mahendra will have a chance to do great things with his own life.
