On Sunday, January 17, sixteen year old Ikhari Hinds-Lewis traveled to Barbados from Brooklyn, NY with his mother, siblings and family to bury his grandmother, Olwen Hinds nee Boyce.  One hour after his arrival, Ikhari was hit by a car. Over an hour later, Ikhari was admitted into Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados and underwent emergency surgery on his swelling brain. To present, Ikhari remains in a medically induced coma while doctors monitor his condition.

On Wednesday, January 20, Ikhari's grandmother was buried but, unfortunately, he could not be present for her funeral.  As Ikhari fights for his life, his mother, Kassim Hinds, remains by his side as a source of support and love.

Likewise, Kassim is in need of spiritual and monetary support from her family and friends while she comforts her son through this unexpected tragedy. While most of her immediate family has returned home to America, Kassim must stay behind in hopes of Ikhari's recovery.

We are asking (and appreciative) for any monetary assistance you can offer, whether large or small. Below are some of the items that will incur an out of pocket expense for Ikhari's mother, Kassim:

**Update** Please note, Kassim received word from the hospital on January 26, 2016 that hospital costs at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados will be fully covered. However, once Ikhari returns to the United States, he will continue to need medical care that may or may not be covered depending on what her insurance covers and whether the doctors that see Ikhari are in/out of network. Additionally, Kassim will need to remain out of work to care for her son, which will result in limited income for her family. Thank you to everyone who has contributed monetarily or by prayer.

rent back home in Brooklyn so they can keep their apartment. Kassim is new to her job and is not eligible for paid sick leave. Her union doesn't provide disability for her dependents, and her husband does seasonal work and is presently layed off over the winter months.  Additionally, when Kassim returns home to America with Ikhari, she will need to remain with him until his condition improves.

We thank you for your love and support and will give continual updates on the status of Ikhari Hinds-Lewis' health. Please continue to keep Ikhari in your prayers. Every morsel of positive energy helps.

Eternally grateful,

Coreen "Coco" Boothe (cousin of Kassim and Ikhari)
