Human Ecology in Guinea-Bissau

$345 of $1,000 goal

Raised by 7 people in 10 months
Support education & sustainable development by donating to our GeoAnth team (Rachel, Sami, & Kamran) from Kennesaw State University. Each of us chose a different aspect of human ecology in Guinea-Bissau to research and have been working on creating curriculums for each topic. The funds raised will go towards assisting our team with travel expenses, and for equipment to be donated to the students, faculty, and locals of Guinea-Bissau.

Understanding Human Ecology in Guinea-Bissau
During the month of July our team will travel to Guinea-Bissau, to help build & create a human ecology/environmental studies program with students and faculty from local universities. In preparation for our study abroad trip, our team at KSU has worked on curriculum projects focused on energy & agriculture all semester. If you would like to hear more about our research feel free to send us a message or leave a comment!

The Specifics
We've set the goal to help cover travel expenses like plane tickets ($2,000), housing ($900), & meals ($500) for each team member. The trip could cost as much as $4,000 each. The 3 of us have applied for the Global Learning Scholarship, and have obtained $1,000 each in funds to support our travels.

The goal is to raise $2,000 for each students travel expenses ($6,000) & the remaining funds ($4,000) will be used to purchase specialized conservation and research equipment (e.g., solar panels, batteries, notebooks, etc.), teaching materials and textbooks for our undergraduate host country counterparts, and seed and equipment for some of the local farmers.

The best way you could help would be by donating whatever amount you feel comfortable with ($5, $10, $50, etc). Every penny will help support education and sustainable development in Guinea-Bissau. If you don't have the funds this month or next, we are also packing some bags of stuff to donate such as any usable spare electronics, school supplies, or deflated soccer balls, etc. If you have anything you'd like to donate please send an email to sami1215@icloud.com with your name, items, & location and if you're with in a certain area we may be able to come pick it up!

We would greatly appreciate your support, it would help our team of soon-to-be college graduates with enhancing our knowledge and skills, as well as encouraging collaboration in education and international engagement. Whether your support be monetary, prayer, or a share on fb, we will be so grateful.

Thank you for taking your time to read about our research!
Share, share, share!

We met on friday to go over last minute details, as well as to put together binders with our student activities, interviews, and consent forms! In less than 3 weeks we will be in Dakar, Senegal to get our visas. Then, we're off to Guinea-Bissau to work with students and faculty at Amílcar Cabral University to collaborate over the research we worked on this semester. We will work at the university for the first half of the month, then we will travel throughout Guinea-Bissau to visit the Parc National Cantanhec, and São Domingos, etc., while we conduct interviews and visit with locals, farmers, and business owners.

We were told, by our contact in Bissau, that our tentative itinerary was ambitious. His reasoning was mostly because road and travel conditions are rough during the rainy season (July-August), but we are ready for the challenge! Thank you to all who have donated and sent your support. Thus far the plan is to use the funds to purchase special conservation equipment, like a solar panel, or a mapping device. We will also use some of the funds to pay for a sweet little air bnb in Dakar for 3 nights while we get our visas.

Guinea-Bissau is one of the poorest countries in the world and has sporadic electricity at best. It's common for residents to use batteries/chargers at gas stations, or businesses, to charge their phones. So, we're asking for old/spare portable battery pack donations. Like the ones you can get at a convenience store. They're a really great donation because they're easy for us to pack in our checked luggage. You can message us through gofundme if you do have any electronics (phones, ipods, laptops) you'd like to donate.

The word ambitious fits well to describe the goal of this gofundmepage, as well as our travel plans, and overall project goals. If there's anyone who wants to donate to a specific part of the project, tell us what you’d like your money to go towards. The choices: solar panel, farming equipment, school supplies, mapping devices or to help our team pay for our study abroad expenses!

We realized Saturday morning that there was an issue with our page so, if you had tried to donate but couldn't, it's fixed now!

Every dollar of support and share is much appreciated and we thank you all very much! More updates about our individual projects coming soon!

Much love,

Sami, Rachel, Kamran
