Brooklyn is our precious little girl that was diagnosed with a rare deadly, life-threatening disease called Macrophage Activating Syndrome (MAS), a secondary HLH disorder, that was brought on by Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (sJIA).

Brooklyn’s first sign of illness appeared at 8 months old, in November 2013, with an urticaria like rash that would come and go, usually appearing in the afternoons and gone by the following morning. After seeing several specialists we were told that it was highly likely to be an allergic reaction to something.

Brooklyn fell ill again in December 2013 with RSV bronchiolitis and was admitted to hospital. We noticed that she would battle to recover when contracting any respiratory virus. In February 2014 Brooklyn was admitted to hospital with rotavirus (despite being vaccinated against it). All this time her rash would still appear almost daily like clockwork.

Three weeks after her 1st birthday she developed an unexplained fever for 40+ days. She would have a fever twice a day and it was resistant to NSAIDs such as Panado and Ibuprofen.

During Brooklyn's two months in hospital isolation, she was tested for diseases such as Lymphoma, Leukaemia, tumours, Lupus, and others as well as being treated for Kawasaki disease.

Eventually we flew to Cape Town to meet with a Pediatric Rheumatologist to confirm the arthritis, because of the pain that was so evident in her body.

Over the next 8 months, we travelled back and forth to Cape Town, staying there sometimes for weeks at a time in self-catering accommodation while still maintaining our home in Durban.

In March 2015, Brooklyn began treatment with a biologic that she had a series of reactions too and it was at that stage that her doctor recommended another form of treatment that wasn't available in South Africa. So we borrowed the money and flew over to the U.S. to look for options to save her life.

Our family has faced mountains that most young families never will. We have been at death's door several times over the past 2 years, been homeless because it was initially thought that Brooklyn had contracted an infection in the residence we were living in, felt utterly helpless, both getting retrenched within 2 months of each other, and having to give up everything and travel to the opposite side of the world to get the treatment to save Brooklyn.

However, nothing surmounts to the mountains Brooklyn is faced with daily. She has had the toughest journey imaginable. We are so thankful for the genuine people that care for our baby girl and take the time out to support us on this journey.

This GoFundMe campaign is to help us with the medical costs and daily subsistence living that we need here in the U.S. while Brooklyn is getting the treatment she needs.

Thank you so much
