Her Odyssey - Year Two!
Friends, Family, and Potential Supporters,
In the first season of Her Odyssey, we hiked 2,500 kilometers of Patagonia over 144 days, from Ushuaia to Bariloche. We crossed through 15 National Parks and Preserves, 13 degrees of latitude, and back and forth between Argentina and Chile. The journey has radiated energy, accruing followers from North America to Asia and has generated income for guides, artists, restaurants, hospedajes, gardeners, and bakers along our route through South America.
Now we are asking for your help as we prepare to launch a year-long hiking season making our way toward the equator.
Funds for this stretch will enable us to trade with campesinos along the mountain regions of Chile on the Greater Patagonian Trail, to obtain much-needed water drops as we cross the desert of northern Argentina and Chile, and to hire local guides through some of Bolivia and Peru - which promotes outdoor industry & preservation and also supports our safety.
Sharing the adventure via social media requires significantly more time in town than usual thru-hikes. Administrative costs such as technology, shipping, and outreach add to indirect expenses. Connectivity in towns generally means paying local restaurants for seats and eats, and making new friends mean taking showers.
We continue to make all efforts to meet expenses by using our own savings, selling photos and stories, receiving sometimes sneaky support from within our own inner circle, obtaining gear from our amazing sponsors, and utilizing pro-deals to keep the rest of our gear affordable.
We have realized in this first year that the money we can put into local economies is truly one of the best ways to support local industry and individuals. One of the biggest things we have learned from travels so far is that people do not need help, but rather they deserve dividends for the work they are already doing.
Please consider contributing to this upcoming year-long stretch of adventure. Any contribution level with which you’re comfortable is both welcome and appreciated!
Another (non-monetary) way to help is by sharing the blog ( www.her-odyssey.org ), Facebook page ( www.facebook.com/herodyssey ), Instagram ( https://instagram.com/_herodyssey_/ ), and this GoFundMe effort with your own social networks.
We are humbled in asking for this amount of support, yet seeing the good it can do affirms us in asking. Our sincere thanks again for your support and for taking a moment to share the campaign with friends.

I write to you from a kitchen in Mendoza where we are filming as Susana teaches Neon how to make gnocchi and alfajors. The house is 150 year old and they are using 75 year old utensils which belonged to Susana's mother. As we thank her for the hundredth time for opening her home to strangers, she replies, "I am glad to have you here to cook together, usually I do this all day by myself. It is special when you have someone to share with." These experiences together are the heart of our journey.
Your contributions fuel interactions such as these by enabling us to participate in the cycle of generosity. In some places, this entails paying for a night indoors and internet connections to share stories, pictures, and videos. In other instances, such as this, it helps in providing food and small gifts to our hosts. After over a year of journey and 270 days of hiking, each step continues to lead us to where we ought to be at just the right moment. Your support is integral to keeping that up.
We need your help to continue this journey. At this stage, our personal funds are enough to keep us fed out on the trail, but not to sustain these forays into town, which is where many of the stories and interactions we share with you come from. These exchanges are powered by you.
Her Odyssey has grown to be more than a hike. In fact, at this point, hiking is only half of it. There are multiple ways you can support our mission. By contributing financially you enable us to continue meaningful interactions with people along the journey and engage in the stories we share. By subscribing and commenting on our blog and by liking our social media sites, you promote our cause and boost our standing in the eyes of sponsors. By sharing with your friends and encouraging them to follow us, you help spread the message.
It has been a delight to have you along with us so far and we are grateful for of the encouragement and support you have already given. You have helped make Her Odyssey what it is today and you will influence what she becomes in the future.
If you’re in a place to do so, we ask you to give what you can.
Con todo la corazon (with all our heart),
Bethany (Fidgit) & Lauren (Neon)
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to our trek. We have now walked 230 days from Ushuaia, Argentina to Santiago, Chile. 4000 km (2500 mi), through 23 National Parks and Preserves and been able to meet, highlight, and celebrate hundreds of the most incredibly generous people out here and back home.
Our next 3 month stretch (Santiago, Chile to Salta, Argentina) is through northern Argentina. 4,000 m (12,000 ft) elevation across exposed salt flats making for very little potable water. To safely get through these areas we will need to be able to compensate reliable locals who can get out to us with water drops.
Our spending, per month, is around $1,000 per person, through two of the most expensive countries in South America. Funds you contribute go toward replacing shoes, buying trail food, bringing small gifts to the remote mountain dwelling locals who often invite us in, and finding places in town to update you all via our website, Facebook page, and Instagram.
So we hope you enjoy following our pictures, videos and writing, the unique swag offered, help spread the word, and get out and explore in your own lives.
