My name is Dalton Sizemore and I'm starting this GoFundMe for my mom, Crystal Sizemore. On June 1, 2018, mom was moving into a new apartment and we went to breakfast before we started moving. While at breakfast, she became violently ill, throwing up and having to go lay down in the car with the air on while we finished everything up and got out.
Two days later, after not being able to do anything except sleep while we moved her, she passed out in the hallway on the way to the bathroom. After getting her to the ER, it was determined that she was in septic shock due to a MRSA kidney infection that had started with a UTI she didn't even know that she had.
Over the next week, we were in the ICU as she went into kidney failure, liver failure, acute respiratory failure, and found out she had the infection not only in her kidneys but also in her lungs and heart. We were finally able to get her out of the ICU and she stayed in the telemetry unit for another week before getting transferred to inpatient physical therapy for a week.
Once we finally got her home, she was receiving IV antibiotics and was being monitored weekly. On July 2, 2018, I was on my way to the university I am currently attending for a Master's degree and got a call from her doctor telling me I needed to get her to the hospital as soon as possible because the medication they were giving her had made her kidneys go back into failure. After getting to the ER and having some tests done, they determined her antibiotic level was six times the normal maximum and her kidney function level was three times the normal maximum, which is about five times normal for her. They also saw that she had a new lung infection on one of the scans and started treating her for that as well. So far we have been in the hospital again for a week, and don't see discharge coming within the next several days.
Once she gets out of the hospital, she will have to continue the IV antibiotics from home for at least another month and will have to have home health physical therapy from home until she gets back to her normal level of activity.
Mom is a oncology nurse and absolutely loves caring for others. She's already said several times that she's ready to go back to work, even though she's a patient in the hospital where she works. She will be out of work well into August, if not even longer. While out of work, she obviously is not making her regular income. In addition to myself, a Master's student not making very much, I have a sister who has medical issues that impair her from being able to do much. My mom is also the primary caretaker for my grandmother, who has been disabled due to a severe heart condition since the mid-80s.
I'm trying to make the best of a bad situation, however with mom back in the hospital and the medical bills, medications, and other services still coming in, we're definitely in need of some help. The money raised through this GoFundMe account will go toward mom's medical expenses, as well as making sure the home she, my sister, and my grandmother share continues to run like it should, so that can be one less thing mom has to worry about.
With mom being in the condition she is, it is critical that we are able to pay for the care she needs to get her better, back to work, and taking care of others again. Thanks in advance for anything you're able to do!
