Hello family, friends and people all over the world. My name is Victor Nieto and I am a 26 years old Materials Engineer (BSc. Materials Science and Engineering) graduated from Simon Bolivar University in Caracas, Venezuela.
Studying abroad: RWTH Aachen and the opportunity of a lifetime.
In Venezuela mother’s day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May (May 13th this year). Little did I know that the best mother’s day gift would come just a day later: I received my acceptance letter to the MSc Metallurgical Engineering program at RWTH Aachen University in Germany.
RWTH Aachen is the largest technical university and one of the most prestigious institutions in Germany, and according to THE World University Rankings this year they climbed to the #79 position worldwide.

With more than 3 years of experience in the metallurgical industry, I set myself a goal to do a postgraduate program on this area: more specifically on industrial manufacturing processes with a sustainable approach, which means to use mineral resources in the most efficient and environmentally friendly way. Of course, this is the main appeal of this program due to the fact that Germany is currently leading on sustainability, climate change mitigation and advanced manufacturing processes.
My super hero Mom.
My mom is the main reason why I’m here writing to you guys: she is a high-school teacher and I had always lived surrounded by the noblest job of the world by her side; these experiences made me realize that education would be the tool to provide a better future for her and myself.
After my graduation ceremony, I met my mom outside the university’s auditorium and immediately took my medal off, put it on her and said: “This medal and this degree is as mine as yours, because thanks to you I have accomplished this”. I just hope to repeat this once again in a different continent.
Where will the donations go?
Germany is an amazing country from all points of view, however because I do not have a European passport the process to get a Residence Visa is significantly more complicated.
The main thing I need to provide at the German embassy is proof of sufficient funds to sustain myself during the first year of the program: no less than 8,640€ (720€ per month) for expenses related to: accommodations, food, health insurance, books, and some minor university fees. Unfortunately, this amount is almost impossible for me to gather by the time the program starts on October 7th.
All the funds will be transferred to a Sperrkonto bank account in my name; this is a blocked bank account that would allow me to access the funds after I’ve entered Germany. This ensures transparency on using the funds for educational purposes only on a monthly basis.
Please help me achieve this amazing dream that I’ve had since I was a university freshman! Every donation (no matter how small) and share on social media (FB, Instagram, Twitter) is a step closer towards my goal.
I will be continuously posting updates on this journey, and I promise that from the moment that the program ends I will make a monthly donation to a cause similar to mine until I have reached the amount that I am raising.

Estudiar en el extranjero: RWTH Aachen y la oportunidad de mi vida.
En Venezuela el Día de la madre se celebra el segundo domingo de mayo (13 de mayo este año). Poco iba a saber que el mejor regalo del día de las madres iba a venir atrasado, ya que al día siguiente recibí la mejor noticia de mi vida: fui aceptado en el Master de Ingeniería Metalúrgica en la universidad RWTH Aachen en Alemania.
La carta de aceptación se encuentra en Alemán e inglés si la quieren detallar con gusto se las puedo enviar :)
RWTH Aachen es una de las universidades más prestigiosas en este país, y de acuerdo a THE University Ranking este año avanzaron al puesto #79 a nivel mundial.
Luego de más de tres años de experiencia en la industria metalúrgica, me propuse en especializarme en esta área, principalmente en la fabricación industrial con un enfoque sostenible, es decir el uso de recursos de manera eficiente con un enfoque en reciclaje y reutilización. Este es una de los principales atractivos del programa debido a que actualmente Alemania lidera el tema de fabricación sostenible y tecnologías avanzadas de manufactura.

Mi familia: mi super mamá.
Mi mamá es el principal motivo por el que estoy acá; siendo maestra de educación media siempre viví alrededor del oficio más noble del mundo a su lado y entendí, desde muy joven, que esa sería la herramienta para salir adelante por y para ella: la educación.
Al finalizar mi acto de grado, entre sonrisas y llanto, le puse mi medalla de ingeniero a mi mamá y le dije: “Está medalla y este título es tanto mío como tuyo porque gracias a ti yo he logrado todo”. Espero poder repetir esto nuevamente en otro continente.
¿A dónde irán destinadas las donaciones?
Alemania es un destino increíble desde todo punto de vista, sin embargo al no poseer un pasaporte europeo el proceso de visado es mucho más complicado: principalmente es necesario demostrar fondos suficientes para el primer año de estudios: no menos de 8,640€ (720€ al mes) que comprenden gastos por estadía, manutención y seguro médico. Lamentablemente es un monto que se aleja muchísimo de mis posibilidades para la fecha que inicia el programa 7 de octubre.
Los fondos irán destinados a una cuenta tipo Sperrkonto, una cuenta bloqueada que será liberada al momento de ingresar a territorio alemán; lo que asegura que el dinero será usado por mí mensualmente de forma transparente.
¡Por favor ayúdenme a hacer mi sueño realidad! Cualquier apoyo (donando o compartiendo) es un paso más cerca de la meta. ¡No existe algo como una donación pequeña! cada pequeño aporte significa el mundo para mi.
Continuamente estaré publicando el progreso de este viaje, y prometo que a partir del momento que culmine el programa realizaré una donación mensual a una causa similar a la mía hasta haber alcanzado el monto que estoy recaudando.
