Dave Amalfitano, a 47-year-old father of three young children is dying.

But the bonds of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers can save his life.

Dave is a journeyman inside wireman, but every other day for the last year and a half, Dave has been undergoing invasive hemodialysis. He drives to a clinc, nurses stick a needle in the vein in his arm and a machine cleans his entire blood supply. It takes four hours. It leaves him exhausted. It leaves him worried.

Dave's illness has cost him his health, his livelihood and the time and energy to be there for his daughter Anna, 15, and twin boys, Matthew and Leo, 12.

Dave suffers from polycystic kidney disease, or PKD, a genetic disorder that causes the kidneys to develop cysts and grow many times their normal size. The disease already took his father's life, and Dave's only wish is to be around for his kids.

But thanks to a generous stranger - a brother from halfway across America - Dave's life may be saved.

Rob Vargas is a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 9 in Chicago. He is married and has a 3-year-old daughter. He read about Dave's story in the IBEW's Electrical Worker newspaper last July, and he decided to act.

"I put myself in his shoes," he said, "and I dont know what my family would do without me. I called Dave and told him, if I'm a match, you can have my kidney."

After many rounds of testing and countless blood draws, Rob is Dave's perfect match. Though they are strangers, they share a genetic bond that was only found because of the bonds of the Brotherhood.

The only thing standing in their way is money.

Rob is the sole provider for his family, and 6-8 weeks off work is a loss he can't afford. For Dave, after so much time not working and the crushing weight of COBRA insurance payments, he is at imminent risk of losing his home to foreclosure.

The sheriffs told him he is not on their schedule for this month, but next month? They can't or won't say.

Rob's generosity is something Dave will never forget, but your generosity is needed to help these two men complete the life-saving surgery that will forever bond them together and give Dave and his family a new lease on life.

Please contribut what you can to help save Dave's home and to smooth the financial road blocks for Rob and his family. Their amazing story still needs its ending.

So the Evaluation is done and not so good news has come for it ! Rob has a horse shoe kidney which means his kidneys fused together in the womb so he is not able to donate his kidney to Dave. We want to thank everyone who has supported us, donated , and shared our story. We are still in Baltimore and are still trying to understand what is going on. If anyone has any questions please contact us. Thank you again for everything! The Vargas Family
