Hi Friends and Fans,

This is the most difficult post I have ever made.

First of all, please know that I am feeling fine and I am fully confident that things will be back to normal in no time, despite the following not-so-pleasant news.

Recently, I had a routine physical exam with X-rays, CT scans, etc.  I was feeling, and still feel, totally fine. However, my wife and I decided we should do this because neither of us have had one in a while.

Well, to make a long story short (or maybe longer), they found a mysterious mass in my chest area, near my heart. It was suggested that I find a specialist to have it checked more thoroughly.  I did find such a doctor (actually a brilliant thoracic specialist/surgeon) who suggests I have the mass surgically removed before it possibly begins to push on my heart. Again, I’m feeling fine and no symptoms … Crazy, right?

So … It turns out that there are two types of surgery for removing such a mass. While one is less invasive and performed robotically, the other is what they call transternal, which is basically opening the chest (like open heart surgery)!!

The doctor suggests that transternal is the best option for me so he can get the whole thing out and check out what is happening in and around that area.  I will travel back to L.A. later in July to schedule the surgery soon thereafter.

I decided to come back to Milano, as scheduled in June, to get my things in order here, put equipment in storage, and put activities on hold for a while in Europe.  Not sure what I’ll be able to do and when after the surgery … Have to take it sloooooow for a while. (Me, slow? … Not good)

After surgery, the initial recovery time will be around six weeks or so and then it takes about six months for the breast bone to fully fuse back together after this!  Thus, this post letting everyone know what is happening, before you start hearing all sorts of crazy things!

It seems that especially in recent years we have all offered prayers, emotional support, and/or whatever we can to loved ones and friends in need. This time it’s me … as much as I hate to say it!

I have no medical insurance that will cover the costs of such a surgery so I am setting up this GoFundMe campaign to ask for help with these expenses, which can become quite enormous, as well as the fact that I will not be able to work during the recovery period.  All contributions, whether small, large, or merely emotional, will be greatly appreciated.  You can also make donations via PayPal if you prefer....!  Please contact me for that direct link.

I have total confidence in the doctor, as he is one of the best in the field for thoracic surgery. He’s also a great guy and very informative and attentive to my concerns. He returns my calls personally (I have his cell number) and he even texts me back when I have questions … Rare!!!!!

I’m really not so concerned about the surgery itself but more about rescheduling all my stuff and putting life on hold for a minute … I’ll miss a few important opportunities which (we all know as musicians) is a drag.  However, life is more important!

In closing, I would just like to say that I do encourage everyone to have their yearly physical (with pictures), and don’t wait if something feels or looks a little funny!! Have it checked out!!! You just never know in cases like this unless someone happens to catch it in an X-ray or CT scan, etc.

Thank God for these tools, techniques, and medical science.

I will be posting updates periodically so stay tuned.  It will definitely be “All About the Groove” after this.

Thank you for all the Love and Support moving forward.  Forward is the only way I know.

All the best for now,

Hi Friends,
Just wanted to send along one final BIG THANKS to all who contributed to my GoFundMe Campaign. As most of you already know, I am in full recovery mode, feeling fantastic and happily, things back to normal... playing, recording, teaching, etc. Thank God!
It feels great to be getting back into the action, here in L.A. and I will also continue traveling etc., as before. Several new and exciting projects have presented themselves here in the states, so, I'm also happy to report that I'll be spending more time back here in L.A. and in and around the US. Stay tuned for more exciting news and please follow things on my Facebook and Instagram pages.
In closing, I would like to wish you and your families a Very Happy Holiday Season, Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2019.

Hi Friends,

Just wanting to share the latest and keep everyone updated during my rapid recovery period. I am now feeling very fine, strong and positive with a renewed sense of energy and enthusiasm.... pretty much getting back to normal.
I am actually back to playing, teaching and doing some gigs and recording. No heavy lifting just yet, "Doctors Orders". Back to driving and getting around, as usual, lots of walking, exercise and even able to swim a little now as well. It's really incredible what the human body can do in an instance such as this. The hospital/medical bills continue to roll in and I have reached out to and I am working with a few industry organizations that can offer some assistance in trying to get some of the costs reduced and help with some expenses. However, my state of not being able to work, for the last three months, still takes a toll and makes things a little tight. For this reason, my GoFundMe campaign will continue to run and I appreciate any and all support through this effort as well. The good news is that I am now able to work and get things rolling again.....Ha, pun intended!
I will travel back to Milano next month, for just a few days, to put things more in order there, storage, play a few gigs with my trio and make some important decisions about the future and my presence in Europe. I do really love the opportunities available there, to be able to play, teach and live is truly something that is very special. On the other hand, there are some new and exciting, musical prospects, that have presented themselves here in the states and I will also be looking into these with great interest. I will certainly keep you all posted on how things further progress.

In closing, I thank you all greatly for your Prayers, Positivity, and Support so far, during this entire ordeal.

Oh Yeah... PS: This month I also celebrated another memorable and wonderful trip around the Sun.

Onward and Upward!
Movin and Groovin,

Hi Friends,
Just a short Update to let you all know that I am doing very well and feeling stronger and stronger every day. It's been one month since my surgery and I must say that I am even surprised at how great I feel. I'm able to drive again and slowly getting back to most normal daily activities. Still slow and steady with no High Cymbal Crashes or anything like that, just yet.. :) but getting back to normal, at a good pace. Dr. Kannan also says I am doing remarkably well.....! Continuing to wrestle with inevitable insurance issues, hopeful that all can all get resolved in good time.
Just wanted to send a shout out to you all for your Love, Prayers, and Support.
All the best as I continue to move forward. Onward and Upward....!
Much Love,

Hi Friends,

Just a short Post Op Update....:)

I am now back home after my surgery and I must say, I am feeling Really Great!!!

The Dr. said things went really well and the best outcome that we could have hoped for. The biopsy of the mass: BENIGN!!! Yay!!!

Aside from the soreness, in and around my chest and upper body (to be expected) I am feeling fine. Resting, little walks, eating well and lots of water. My girls are all taking good care of Hubby and Dad. The photos of the scars below are only to show the severity of the operation. Not meaning to gross you out. I am actually a little amazed at how good I do feel. Medical Science, again, pretty amazing!!! That's a good thing..!

I am so thankful for Dr. Samer A. Kanaan and his team and as well as all the folks assisting him, before, during and after surgery.

All of your support means everything to me and I still humbly ask for donations at this time, directly to my

GoFundMe Campaign. http://www.gofundme.com/HelpRickLatham

Every bit of this help is so much appreciated, more than you know.

The initial estimate from the Hospital is $129,558.00 !!!

I still have a long way to go, to cover the expenses which are forthcoming, but I remain optimistic that I will find the means to manage things.

In closing, I encourage everyone to please share this, my story and my campaign with all your Friends, The Drumming/Percussion Community, as well as any mutual Music Industry Associates, etc.

Keep an eye on my FB and Instagram pages for future updates to come.

Thank You for your Prayers and Support..this far.

Much Love to You All.

Onward and Upward,

It's All About The Groove!!!!
