Melissa Kirkpatrick was gravely injured in a head on collision on Hwy 59 in Easton, CT. The other driver went into her lane on Saturday, 2/16. Melissa had recently relocated to CT to accept a new position in Stamford.
Her injures are severe. She is in the ICU in critical condition. She spent her birthday in ICU instead of being able to celebrate with co-workers and family. There is extensive lower body and abdomen trauma. It is unlikely she will ever walk again.
Since she just started her job, she doesn’t qualify for short term disability or FMLA. She is the sole breadwinner for her family, including her widowed mother, her husband, Karl, who is an Iraq war vet, her two small children ages 12 and 9 and her stepchildren, ages 13 and 15. She is also a survivor of domestic violence and has already overcome so many obstacles in her life.
Due to the split second actions of another person, their lives are going to be forever changed. There will be medical bills, housing and utility bills and the family now has no income.
Melissa is a strong, intelligent person. She’s an amazing wife, mother and stepmother. She is the support for everyone she knows and now is the time to support her in her hour of need. As the ex wife of her husband, I can tell you how much she means to her family and to me. She’s as close to me as a sister. She is a part of my blended family and she is my best friend. We do not have a conventional family but I love her dearly.
