The Alternative Leader: A Leadership Redesign Program

Introduction:

I am writing to humbly ask for your help to pay for an 8-week training program to learn how to write and market an ebook about leadership.  I call my idea, “The Alternative Leader,” and ground it in my two decades of working as a therapist and activist. It feels urgent to me to help the world reconsider how we lead.  But I need your help to refine my ability to deliver my message.

I outline my vision below.  I hope you will take the time to read it and let me know what you think.

But if you just want to watch my video and donate, go ahead and click on the video below and then find the purple "Donate" button in the top right corner of this screen.

Thank you for your trust and generosity!  Please share this post widely with others in your community.

Background:

It’s not professional to be human.

At least that’s how I first learned about leadership.

I don’t remember how old I was when it became clear to me that someone who shows vulnerability looks “weak” in the eyes of the world. For example, if I tell you I get scared, it’s not likely you are going to pay me money to coach you through your own hurdles.  It would be bad for business to admit I struggle too.  You want a fearless coach, not a fear-ridden softy, right?

Here’s my dilemma.  I am a coach, a doctor, an educator and a group facilitator.  And I personally, daily, feel afraid.  And instead of judging my fear as wrong, I am wondering if there might be something terribly wrong with the design of leadership itself.

It seems our culture require leaders to “have it all together”, to be “beyond” humanness and to muscle past how much we are in fact hurting and lonely.

I shudder knowing how many years I have tried to fit into this model.  It’s just not me.  I have way too many rough edges.  I wake up with messy hair, my childhood wounds need regular tending and my intimate life often feels like a roller coaster, with highs and lows that stretch me as I wind my way to better understand love.

But what if my wounds, rather than something to be ashamed of, were the very mechanism by which healing could flow through me?  What if I am stronger for opening to my pain, not weaker?  And what if I could join with others to acknowledge, celebrate and learn from our shared humanness as if it possessed precisely the lessons that the world needs?

I believe by facing and owning my pain that my leadership becomes grounded in true integrity, in an “integrated” humanness that is transparent, vulnerable and honest.

And I believe this is what our world is calling for.

My goal is to change the design of leadership that guides our models for healing.

And I need your help.

The Appeal:

My first step is to write a series of ebooks about leadership that can be easily purchased and downloaded by anyone on the internet.  I want this idea to spread.  It seems ebooks are the way to light a fire in the world that can be fanned into larger projects. But knowing how to write and successfully market this kind of publication is a skill I do not possess. I have signed up for an 8-week intensive training for healthcare professionals to learn how to write an ebook.  And I am writing to humbly ask for your financial contribution to pay for the training so that I may refine my ideas and cultivate the skills to share them widely.

The cost of the program is $8,000.  I have $3,000 of my own money to contribute. I am aiming to raise $5,000 through this fundraiser to pay the balance of my tuition. I have until July 3rd to complete my payment.  By the end of the 8-week training, my aim – and the aim of the program – is to have my ebook ready for publication and purchase.

With this ebook, I hope to specifically target anyone who is already in a healing enterprise - other therapists, consciousness leaders, coaches, activists and authors – to transmute the struggles they may hide into the brilliance from which they may lead.  And then each person touched by these leaders will continue to benefit from the permission to be more human, integrated and real.  I believe that this model is self-propelling with the potential to transform communities.

What You Will Get for Your Contribution:

 ·       Anyone who contributes above the $25 mark will get a copy of my ebook, The Alternative Leader, and mention on my “Contributors” page.

·       Anyone who contributes above the $100 mark will get a copy of my ebook, The Alternative Leader, mention on my “Contributors” page and 30 minutes of leadership coaching.

·       Anyone who contributes above the $500 mark will get a copy of my ebook, The Alternative Leader, mention on my “Contributors” page, 60 minutes of leadership coaching plus an invitation to contribute your story to my publication.

·       Anyone who contributes above the $1,000 mark will get all of the above benefits plus be invited to collaboratively contribute to my ebook, join my 6-month Leadership Training Program or gift entry to the program to an individual of your choosing.

I hope this appeal may touch something in you. Perhaps it is the pressure you have experienced as a leader. The yearning for permission to be more “real” in your connection to others. Or even your own experience of freedom that has come from working with me or being in an authentic community that welcomes you as you are.  Whatever resonates and may inspire you to contribute, I thank you deeply for your support and trust to help me spread this message, embody this courage and grow this healing.

More about Me:

I am 42 years old this year. I have been in training and practice as a therapist for almost twenty years.  I have been serving as a leader, community organizer, activist and advocate for three decades.  My first encounter with leadership was when I was 12, on behalf of my three younger siblings after my mother's death in the face of my father's instability. By the time I graduated grade school I had served as Class President, Student Council President and class Valedictorian.  By the time I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology, I had spent a year as a Fulbright Scholar in London, founded multiple organizations on behalf of women's and human rights and been awarded a national service award by the American Psychological Association.  I continue to lead as an Intimacy Coach in private practice in Port Townsend, WA, an Authentic Relating facilitator and community founder and a consent-in-dance activist.
