Help Save Zoe
Donation protected
My best friend Courtney loves her dog Zoe more than anything in the world. Zoe is her baby and she will do anything for her because Moms do anything for their babies. Courtney adopted Zoe, a now feisty 5 year old rat terrier/miniature poodle mix, from a high kill shelter in 2013. She saved Zoe's life then and now she has to save her life again.
Courtney noticed a lump on Zoe's eye lid and took her to the vet for evaluation. Following work up and biopsy, Zoe was diagnosed with a Grade II Mast Cell Tumor on her eyelid on April 23. Mastocytoma or Mast Cell Tumor is a cancer of a type of blood cell normally involved in the body's response to allergens and inflammation. MCT is the most common skin tumor in dogs and surgical removal is the treatment of choice.
Because of a Mast Cell Tumor’s aggressive behavior, wide margins of what appears to be normal tissue around the tumor needs to be excised to increase the likelihood that the tumor has been completely removed. Because of the location, removal of the entire tumor on Zoe’s eyelid requires removing her eye and tissue underneath and around the area. Unfortunately, due to the location of the tumor and difficulty of getting wide margins, radiation and/or chemotherapy will likely be required as part of her treatment. Due to spreading of Mast Cells to one of her lymph nodes, the removal of Zoe’s affected lymph node has also been recommended.
Ever since she was recused at the tender age of 1, Zoe and her mom have been inseparable ever since. She’s been a fixture of the Baltimore neighborhood of Federal Hill, where you can often see her chasing squirrels and other wildlife at the Federal Hill Park, or posing for pictures overlooking the Inner Harbor in her Ravens or Orioles gear. She also enjoys long trips to the eastern shore to visit her grandma and grandpa and to see her doggie “uncles” Bo and Walker. If you have ever loved a dog more than anything in the world, how those of us with human children love our babies, then you can imagine how much Courtney loves Zoe and will do anything to allow her to continue to have an amazing life.
While there’s a long road to recovery, with the surgical removal of the Mast Cell Tumor and additional treatment (radiation and/or chemo), Zoe has a good chance of getting into remission and continue giving joy, companionship and many face licks to her proud mom and the rest of us that love her. I started this page in hopes the generosity of those who love Zoe and those who just love to help others in need will help offset the extreme financial burden Courtney is facing in getting Zoe the help she needs to save her life. Courtney is extremely grateful for any help you can give towards her treatment or even just the wide sharing of this page. The donated funds will be used for the cost of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. If any funds are left over Courtney will pay it forward to another pet in need.
