A Dog's Angel

needs Help.

Hi, my name is Arrow and I'm what you would lovingly call a Belizean Whippet. I'm the first dog that Angelika saved, here in Belize. She adopted me and then gave me what every dog dreams about every day; a loving 'fur-ever' home. For that, I am eternally grateful; as are numerous other dogs and yes, if I have to admit it, also cats. However, this story is not about me, nor is it the story of all the other dogs and cats that Angelika has saved. This story is of a true angel that has helped so many; what I would call an “animal angel”. This is the true story about “Miss Angelika”, and about all the woof-woof's and meow's she has saved.

Miss Angelika wasn’t always able to provide a home for every needy animal she came across. But because of her kind heart, she was able to save many from certain starvation, or dying from thirst because some 'asshole' thought it wise to tie a dog up to a post in the middle of a yard in the scorching sun. It boils my blood just to think about it (no pun intended).

With each passing day, Miss Angelika would also find homes for many strays that had been dumped by the side of the road by insensitive owners; or abandoned because their owners decided to move without taking their pets with them. It just about breaks my heart, when I think about it.

She would go from door to door here in Succotz; to talk to the people about getting them to spay and neuter their pets. I can remember at least 30 to 35 dogs and about 15 cats that ended up being operated on. Not that she paid for all these operations. No, that was where the decent people from CAWS came and helped. (CAWS is the Cayo Animal Welfare Society. Someday I will tell you all about this vast network of dedicated folks).CAWS Belize  But there is one thing that Miss Angelika doesn’t talk about; something that her grinch of a husband regularly gets upset about.

M. O. N. E. Y. In the 3 years that they have been living in Benque and Succotz, she has spent moocho, mulo of their own money, to help these poor creatures. She has a special place where she feeds stray street dogs; where she places water bowls and just talks to them. Every morning, rain, hail or shine, you can see her with bags filled with food and goodies, on her way to the lost and lonely dogs and cats. Then, off she goes again in the evening. This happens day in and day out. There are even some that say the street dogs in our neighborhood look even better than the dogs that are lucky enough to have an owner. I would agree, thou I'm still the best looking of them all. OK, OK, maybe I'm a bit biased!

Now the big question is... You’re probably wondering why I’m telling you all this? Well, for starters, Miss Angelika now needs help herself; help that neither I, nor any of my animal friends, can help her with. Let me explain.

For the past year and a half, she has been in constant pain. Some days not so much while other days the pain is way too much. It’s pain that no one should have to deal with. Running from one doctor to the next, in the hope that someone can help her, Miss Angelika has had very poor results. She has tried so-called “bush doctors” and “herbal healers”, all to no avail. Lotions, potions, creams, and pills have all ended with only one result; a big fat empty wallet! I even tried barking at the pain, only to find that it did not work. Now I know that my mom is humble, but lucky for her, I am not. I am asking you good people, to help my Angel with all that you can spare. Even little sums, when added together, become significant sums.

The reason I’m doing this, is because she needs the money for a flight and, once at her destination, funds to be able to stay for a while. Depending on what they find wrong, she may not even come back to Belize. If that was to happen, she’ll want me flown over to her, and I don't know where that money will come from, either. She will have to make a completely new start, and that also will cost money.

Unfortunately, all our money is frozen; all our savings might be gone because of this. So, this brings me to the actual point of me telling you guys this story about my Angel. She has to fly to Germany to see this doctor. No big issue, in this day and age of flying machines (airplanes), one would think. Mr. Grinch fired up his trusty laptop and started scouring the net for the best and cheapest flights, unaware that there were sinister forces out to thwart his plans. It seems their bank in Belize was under scrutiny by the FTC in the USA, for crimes my mom and dad did not commit. Then, the Central Bank of Belize also got involved, and they just up and closed the Bank. Which brings me to the second part of the 'why.'

A while back, Miss Angelika told her sister about her problem. They talked for a very long time about her struggles and that she was getting depressed and discouraged about her life and living in general. The talk helped somewhat, and then they went back to their usual lives. Mum totally forgot about the conversation, but her sister had not. It appears, her sister spoke to her Doctor in Germany about the illness and after listening and pondering the problem, the Doctor came to the conclusion that she could help Angelika. Would you believe me if I told you Angelika was absolutely ecstatic when her sister told her about it? Well, she did! After telling her husband about it, he immediately said that she had to immediately go and see this doctor. (Ok, maybe not immediately, but it was in a timely matter.)

And that brings me back to the big question which I am asking you. Could you help? Could you spare a little out of your own pocket for a very special lady that has helped so many others when they couldn’t help themselves? Even the smallest amounts will help my Mum seek the help she so desperately needs. And in return, I promise that I will keep you updated with how she is doing and where she's at on her journey to recovery. Thank you for reading my story and, if you can help, thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Life with pain is bearable, life without, worthwhile.
