Devastated by Indonesia Earthquake, Assist the Rebuild of Peduli Anak Orphanage

When there is nowhere else for desperate and abandoned Indonesian children to turn to, the Peduli Anak Foundation is there.

The Peduli Foundation, on the island of Lombok,  provides these children a permanent refuge, good meals, comfortable beds to sleep on, an education to give them a future and most important of all, a sanctuary where they know they are cared for and loved.

Following the recent magnitude-7 earthquake, the children and staff of the orphanage are safe, but that home (and much hope) is now destroyed.  The children are traumatized.

The orphanage was originally constructed through the generosity of donations, and that help is needed again.

Why Help:

More than 80 children depend on the Peduli Anak Foundation for their safety, welfare and future. This is their home.

The orphanage is funded and managed by the Peduli Anak Foundation. As a small NGO, Peduli Anak Foundation spent 13 years acquiring donations and building the structures to support 80 children in the orphanage. Currently living in tents, these children cannot wait another 13 years to rebuild.

Our campaign team are the co- founders of Peduli Anak , sponsors and volunteers, hoping to raise funds for the reconstruction of the facilities.

Additional Information

Who are the children?

Most of the children at Peduli Anak were found living on the streets. They were referred by the Indonesian government, other welfare agencies or even concerned citizens who inform the orphanage when there’s a child in need. Many of the children are also victims of broken homes, orphans, neglected, abused and exploited. Following the quake, they are living in temporary tents. Peduli Anak is their only home.

Peduli Anak also offers day care and primary education to some local children free of charge.

Repair work has begun, school and kitchen buildings are being fixed up. The homes will require more work and resources. In the meantime, the tents serve as home to these beautiful smiling children.

The earthquakes on the Lombok island have a big influence on the children from Peduli Anak. To deal with their trauma staff use ‘trauma healing technics’, including music therapy, painting, drawing and writing.

This week Safe Zones were created to help children manage their fears and anxiety about safety during earthquakes and tremors. These are white squares drawn on the ground near their tents with the text: Tempat Aman (Safe Place). These safe zones are created as far as possible from buildings and trees.

Here are a few drawings children made during one of the trauma healing sessions.

A big thank you to all our donors. It’s wonderful to see so many people come together from all parts of the world to help underprivileged children who are now earthquake victims.

Sadly, yesterday, Lombok was again hit by 2 large earthquakes measuring 6.3 and 7.0, each followed by numerous strong after shocks.

Thankfully children at Peduli Anak Foundation are safe but very frightened.

As so much was already destroyed at the orphanage, there was little left for yesterday’s earthquakes to damage.

Life is much more complicated now with no proper structure and no power: a make shift kitchen to cook for 80 children, plus staff and volunteers. One large tent is now the living and sleeping facility.

The incredible staff and volunteers are surely exhausted yet their priority remains the children, providing a sense of normalcy despite dire living conditions.

Your donations will help rebuild their home, the Peduli Anak.
