Jumpstart Haitian Farming Community

Donation protected
Since the summer of 2015, thousands of Haitian migrant workers have been displaced from the Dominican Republic after the government enforced a series of measures that made their presence in the country illegal. This has caused an unprecedented crisis where several thousand once legal residents of the Dominican  Republic, who were employed within the farming industry, are now without a legal status, jobs or stable homes. In response to this crisis, the Haitian Community Land Trust (HCLT) and the Oganizasyon Ayisyen Ki Soti Sendomeng Pou Konstwi Ayiti (OASPKA) partnered, with the common goal of securing land and starting an organic farming community in Haiti in order to provide a home and a source of sustainable income for those who have been displaced.

Since December 2015, HCLT and OASPKA have secured nearly 2,000 acres of land from the Haitian government in the Nord-Est department of Haiti. With an initial contribution of $1,800 from HCLT members, we have employed 18 heads of families from these displaced communities. The affected families have also contributed farming tools and equipment in support of the project. Thus far, 2.5 acres of land has been cleared and prepared for planting. But, we need your help to ensure the continued success of this project.

This initial planting and harvesting season will set the pace for this project. There are many people, in Haiti and in the Dominican Republic, who are counting on our support in order to ensure long-term success. We need to raise $15,000 dollars to finance initial planting cycles. Your contribution will go to directly toward:

*Land preparation
*Crop Cultivation
*Harvest
*Initial Distribution fees for crops from farm to market
*Living wages for those working on the project

Your donation will empower displaced populations to help themselves by sustaining the community they are creating. Your urgency and participation are crucial however, as in 30 days initial funds for land clearance will run out and without our collective support the project will come to a halt.  Please consider contributing to this important cause!

**HCLT is a nonprofit organization, with a pending 501(c)(3) status, formed as a response to the Dominican-Haitian migrant crisis. Our objective is to help empower grassroots organizations of Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic to foster sustainable communities in Haiti. Our local partner OASPKA is a non-profit grassroots community organization that has mobilized Haitian people in the Dominican Republic who once played an integral part in the nation’s farming industry and are now without jobs and face great uncertainty.
