Hurricane Relief for Haiti

Donation protected
When Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti, the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth* were right there. Since the late 1990’s, our Sisters have been quietly working in Haiti, partnering with individuals and communities to bring about real change. For days, even weeks, after Hurricane Matthew, the world watched Haiti’s heartbreaking struggle. Hurricane Matthew was front page news. Now, months after a level of destruction of epic proportions, Haiti’s reality has started to fade from public view. But, the needs keep growing. So now, more than ever, the work of our Sisters needs a greater voice.

Hurricane Matthew devastated a nation that was still reeling from a string of natural disasters that is so unfathomable, it reads like a work of fiction. In 2010, Haiti had a hurricane, two earthquakes, and a cholera epidemic. Hurricane Matthew took an already painfully fragile nation, and made everything exponentially worse.

Our Sisters who are missioned in Haiti, who have already come to know a people and nation that has faced constant struggle, say that after Hurricane Matthew, people are more desperate than ever.  Sister Dianne Moore, whose ministry is in two rural villages outside of Port-Au-Prince, is right in thick of where the hurricane hit the hardest. She sees first hand people who had nothing, shockingly, now have even less than nothing. And the needs are constant and, perhaps, unending.

So how can you help?  The best way to help is to send money so Sister Dianne and our dedicated volunteers can purchase the things that are so critically needed.

To date, donations in the wake of Hurricane Matthew from individuals and organizations alike have helped to address basic needs such as food, water, clothing and medicine (which are all now harder to find and much more expensive). Donations have also allowed us to support efforts to repair roads and rebuild homes, schools and hospitals.  Your donation, however small, will go directly to helping those in need.

We appreciate your assistance at this critical time.  Blessings on you for your concern for the people of Haiti.

*The Sisters of Charity were founded by Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, in the spirit of Saint Vincent de Paul and Saint Louise de Marillac, in Emmitsburg, Maryland, in 1809. In 1859 Mother Mary Xavier Mehegan founded the New Jersey community known as the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth.

Today the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth are engaged in education, health care, pastoral and social service ministries in 19 dioceses within the United States, in El Salvador and Haiti. The Congregation currently numbers 285 vowed members. The Seton Associate relationship has 280 affiliated lay and religious women and men.
