Since September 2013, The Homaira Rahaman Foundation (HRF) has served the children of Kabul through its flagship project and first school for orphaned children. We began with 50 boys and girls in grades 1-4, and steadily increased enrollment each year, adding two more grade levels, bringing the total student population to just over 100 in 2015. The Homaira Rahman School is a fully functioning primary school, run jointly by HRF and another charitable non-profit, The Orphans and Widows Association.
Your contributions provide the following support :
· Curriculum learning in Math, English, Farsi and Computer classes
· A professional staff including a school principal, 5 teachers, a cafeteria staff, a school bus driver and a security guard
· Computers and other essential equipment for the labs and libraries as well as school supplies
· Support for the HRF Learning Center at the OWA School in Kabul
We firmly believe education is one of the key drivers of Afghanistan’s sustainable social and economic development. Increased levels of literacy translate to larger economic output, higher employment levels, better health, and higher marks along numerous other development indicators.
HISTORY
HRF was established in April 2009 in honor of Ms. Homaira Rahman, who on July 4, 2008, had her very young life tragically cut short. While there is no way to explain this senseless tragedy, both friends and family agreed this foundation was a worthy tribute to honoring her legacy. It is a testament not only to Homaira’s giving nature, but more importantly to her ability of inspiring others to support worthy causes.
As an Afghan-American, Homaira graced her community with a lasting impression. A philanthropist who always extended a hand to those in need, to fellow friends, and to family. She obtained a bachelors degree at George Mason University and progressed quickly in her young career to become a senior Human Resources specialist while remaining a steadfast advocate of multiple humanitarian causes. Through some of these efforts, she espoused a strong belief in the value of education – particularly as it concerned the plight of Afghanistan’s orphans.
ABOUT HRF
HRF is a US-based, all-volunteer, 501 c3 non-profit organization established in 2009 to help the orphans of Afghanistan. We believe that an orphan’s struggles reflect those of Afghan society. Three decades of bloody conflict and instability virtually destroyed the country’s education system.
We strongly believe that a renewed focus on education will break the intergenerational chains of poverty and allow people to live empowered lives. To make education accessible to Afghan orphans, we partner with local and international NGOs in creating impact projects and provide financial assistance, technical assistance and support to grass roots groups and dedicated individuals whose goals are aligned with ours.
In addition to helping to create a school and a learning center for orphans, we also help various underfunded orphanages across Afghanistan meet their most urgent needs, and occasionally offer humanitarian assistance and emergency aid to distressed communities in the wake of natural disasters.
