Gueros Lar Par Surgery

Our beloved pup Guero an unstoppable chocolate lab, started coughing and breathing especially heavy and couldn't seem to catch his breath, so we 1st took him to our regular vet, Banfield Pet Hospital at Petsmart, where they convinced me to upgrade his care plan to $44 month, so it would cover all these tests they thought he needed, thinking it was Pnuemonia, referred him Emergency Animal Hospital where they kept him on Oxygen with a cannulla over night and correctly diagnosed him with an apparently common condition called Lar Par, for Laryngeal Paralysis Syndrome sometimes called GOLPP. We opted to have the operation done, as odds are good he'll have a few more good years, but the surgery is $2100, through Specialty Animal Hospital, with a 3 night stay, and between Banfield, EAH, and Specialty the costs will be almost $2800.  The difference in his prior care plan and what we opted to increase it to is around $200. 
A few interesting facts about laryngeal paralysis:
1. It has been stated that laryngeal paralysis can be secondary to low thyroid gland function. In my experience this has never been the case.
2. It has been theorized that laryngeal paralysis is the result of a neuropathy of the nerves supplying the larynx.
3. A significant percentage of dogs with laryngeal paralysis are affected with megaesophagus which indicates a more generalized neuropathy.
4. There is some recent thinking that the posterior weakness seen in old dogs may also be linked to this more generalized neuropathy.
