Good For Gurney

David Gurney was diagnosed with stage 4 incurable pancreatic cancer in December. His son Hunter, a U of U student, and inwhatlanguage is reaching out for your help- their hospital bills are overwhelmingly expensive. David is a hero to his three sons and many more lives he has touched. We need your help and together we can be David’s hero.

From Hunter: My dad, David Gurney, is the greatest man I know. His mom passed away from cancer when he was only 16 and he was forced to be the man of the house ever since. My dad worked nights and weekends to get him and his young family through college and graduate school. Working his way up from his first job out of college at Walmart, he became successful at Hewlett Packard. There, he started work before the sun rose and ended after it set as well as working before his 3 sons woke up on the weekends. In his free time he loves to spend time with his 3 sons and wife. My dad is a family man. When not spending time with us, he enjoyed triathlons and long distance biking. Last year, he rode the Seattle to Portland 200 mile bike race. On December 31st 2015, he was diagnosed with stage 4, incurable pancreatic cancer. Tumors have spread to multiple vertebrae as well as his hip, lung, right shoulder, liver and adrenal gland. He has lost a lot of weight and the chemo is rough on him. He’s been in a lot of pain lately and unable to do any of the things he enjoys. His diagnosis seemed completely random as he’s respected his body his entire life, never drinking, smoking, or going a day without proper diet and exercise. Lastly, growing up in South Florida he tried not to be seen, but I watched him give more to people in need than anybody I know. He gave everything from money, food and clothes to sponsoring kids to go to summer camps and Boy Scout activities. I want to raise money for hospital bills and my mom in case the worst happens.

We are inwhatlanguage and every month we try to reach out to our community in an initiative we call inwhatlanguage Cares. Last month, CEO and Founder, Cody Broderick gave a speech at the University of Utah Eccles School of Business. Hunter Gurney was in attendence. During the speech, Cody focused on how to be a better you. He challenged the students in attendence to enter a contest in which they create a vision board and personal affirmations. It was during this time that Hunter reached out to Cody about his father David. It was then that I met with Hunter and we planned on doing the 5K Fundraiser for the his family as well as set up this GoFundMe. All of the proceeds will be transferred to the Gurney Family and be used for hospital expenses.
