Empower Girls Through Education

Donation protected
Help us raise $40,000 for the education and empowerment of girls in Uganda.

Who are we?
We are Girl Up Initiative Uganda (GUIU), dedicated to advancing girls education for the most disadvantaged girls. We have worked in Kampala's urban slum areas serving adolescent girls for over five years as our core target group.

In the communities where we operate, adolescent girls lack the educational, economic, health, and support services to escape the cycle of poverty and oppression that lead them into risky situations for survival such as early marriage and pregnancy, relationships with older men, sex work, and more. The consequences of these actions include gender based violence, contraction of STIs/HIV, dropping out of school, and drug abuse.

In response to these issues, GUIU developed its programs with the overall aim to tackle pervasive gender inequality and patriarchy by empowering girls and women to be confident leaders in their communities. In order to advance girls education and contribute to systematic gender change within low-income communities, GUIU employs a multi-sector community development approach together with girl-centered programming to provide adolescent girls with the support, mentorship, and non-formal education they require to thrive.

What are we doing?

We are raising money to support a two-year Big Sisters Network project. The Big Sisters Network complements Girl Up Initiative Uganda’s flagship program, the Adolescent Girls Program (AGP), to ensure that AGP alumni continue to stay involved and engaged after the training program has ended. Through participation in the network and the activities, we hope that each Big Sister will be equipped with the tools, skills, and knowledge to cultivate deep and sustained positive transformation in their lives and in the communities they serve.

Throughout this two-year project, we will be organizing a four-day residential Big Sisters Camp for 200 adolescent girls each year, totaling 400 girls. We'll be supporting Big Sisters in implementation of other activities, such as advocacy outreaches.

We will also be hiring a Program Officer dedicated to the Big Sisters, creation of a monitoring and evaluation strategy through an external consultant and contributing to organizational administrative costs.

By the end of the project, we will work with each girl to write a personal mission statement and goals, in addition to a community service plan for how she will reach out to other girls to make lasting impacts in their lives.

How will the money be used?
We are looking for a total of $40,000 USD ($20,000 a year over two years) to fund the Big Sisters Network. Here's the specific breakdown of how the funds will be used each year:

Four-day Residential Camp for 200 Big Sisters = $12,714
• Venue Hire = $260
• Meals & Refreshments = $8,008
• Transportation = $624

How can you help?
Each donation is capable of making a change in the lives of young, underprivileged girls of Uganda. We understand that not everyone may be in a position to help monetarily, so we would truly appreciate if you could share the campaign and help us spread a word about the important cause!
