Support GearUp Academy Students

An estimated 4,000 high school age youth in Genesee County are unattached to school and work. GearUp Academy serves the young people who encounter significant barriers to opportunity. This is especially true in high-poverty communities such as Flint, which has a far greater concentration of disconnected youth (2,000 of the 4,000 disconnected youth reside in Flint).

GearUp Academy is a non-traditional high school that seeks to provide students with the inspiration, skills, and resiliency needed to find purpose and satisfaction in their lives. The program balances core curriculum with experiences in critical thinking, problem solving, communication skills, and entrepreneurial ideas.

Under our guidance, students will be expected to earn their high school diplomas and gain employment with one of our community business partners. 

While we hope to nurture all of our students, not all qualify for free and reduced lunches . We have a lot of hardship in this area and especially among our students, including  homelessness and food insecurity.  

We need food for our kids, school supplies, basic clothing and coats, and general winter needs. Every dollar counts towards helping our kids fulfill their basic needs so that they may focus their energy on getting an education and ultimately a job to help provide for themselves and their families.
