The diagnosis
Joseph is a 8 years old boy; cheerful, loving, playful, friendly and completely healthy until Sunday May 31, 2015 at 7:00 pm when he began to have high temperatures of about 39 degrees. We decided to call and consult his pediatrician who was on vacation. The doctor recommended keeping Joseph on Tylenol and watching him closely, and if on Monday he was still presenting the same symptoms to take him immediately to an emergency room and proceed to make the necessary tests. On Monday morning, and throughout the day, Joseph was active, cheerful and with a completely normal temperature until 7:30 pm, approximately, when he began to have high temperatures and this time between 39 and 40 degrees again. We proceeded to take him to the emergency room in Humacao where they performed several tests but the doctor found everything normal. The doctor explained that perhaps it was related to a viral virus and we had to give it time until the body starts to fight fever. That same day he was discharged. The same story was repeated on Tuesday; all day Joseph was active with normal temperatures until 11:00 pm when temperatures went up again to 41 degrees and, this time, he was presenting vomiting, dizziness and expressing that he was starting to see stars. We proceeded to take him to the hospital again, but this time, with the recommendation of its pediatrician, we took him to Hima San Pablo in Caguas. There they proceeded again to make another series of test. The pediatric doctor who was in the hospital commented that it seemed more like the symptoms of dengue, but we could not confirm that until we received the tests. The next day, Wednesday morning, he was discharged and they referred him, again, to a CBC that same Friday with the recommendation that when we received the tests results to reach a pediatrician so they could compare with those he received earlier that day and hopefully get a diagnosis. We could not wait until Friday because Thursday Joseph began to show signs of seizure, vomiting, tremors in the body and cold. We proceeded again to take him to the hospital (Hima Caguas) and asked the doctor to please not discharge him until they had a diagnosis because it did not look normal and it was very frustrating knowing that his temperatures would not go below 39. The doctor, responding to the request, said that for him to be hospitalized we would have to wait until Friday morning so that way the hospitalist could see him and make a decision depending on how he saw him. On Friday morning the hospitalist decided to hospitalize Joseph because he had stopped wanting to eat. He was hospitalized on Friday June 5 and on Saturday June 6 they began another series of tests but we still did not get any type of diagnosis. On Sunday June 7, Joseph’s defenses were down (white blood cells, hemoglobin and platelets) so they decided to contact the hematologist/oncologist to run a bone marrow test and rule out leukemia or any other blood disease. On Tuesday June 9th they did a biopsy and that’s when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B cell type)
Treatment
From this day, everyone's life changed. Joseph was always a very special child to our family, and from this time he became an even greater warrior. Joseph began to fight to regain his health and struggle with an extremely serious, but not impossible, disease. God, from that moment began to show not only in him, but also in our family. The strength and faith has been what have helped us fighting.
After being diagnosed, that same day, Joseph was transferred to the area of pediatric oncology and began his first day of treatment. The doctor explained to us how the treatment would proceed and tell us that he would undergo surgery to put a Med Port and be able to receive his chemotherapy without any problem through it. After he had his catheter, Joseph began to fight his disease with chemotherapy. Joseph began receiving chemotherapy around two times per week for 32 days. Our warrior had moments when he lost his appetite, mood changes, and some days he could not get out of bed. We began to live one day at a time with its ups and downs but the support of the family and the prayers have been the most effective therapy to turn up his spirits and give him strength to continue. Within those 32 days he had three spinals to confirm that the cancer was not in his brain. With God’s grace everything went well and after a month and three weeks in the hospital Joseph was discharged.
New challenges
Until today, Joseph has been receiving weekly chemotherapy. But recently, the drug (asparaginase) for chemotherapy raised its price from approximately $6,000 to $13,000.
On Friday October 9, Joseph went to receive his chemotherapy as planned but unfortunately he couldn't due to low defenses.
Joseph, like many families in the precarious condition of our country, depends on the government health insurance. The insurance refuses to pay for the treatment.
With the help and support of our friends and family, we have conducted various events to pay whatever is necessary for the treatment, but without the help of the health insurance, our plans would complicate.
That is why we ask for your cooperation. Any aid to help pay for Joseph’s treatment will be greatly appreciated.
