Our Friend Dean's Cancer Fight

$12,005 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 147 people in 16 months
Created February 2, 2018
Our friend Dean (and a beloved friend of so many) is 47 years old, married to his love, Stacy, and father of their 17 year old son, Nathan (we call him Dean’s “mini-me”).  Dean was diagnosed with colorectal cancer on October 12, 2017.  He has also lived with type 1 diabetes most of his life, though you would never know it as Dean’s conversations are always upbeat, filled with fun or philosophical musings.  He’s not one to let a disease of any kind hold him down.

If you know Dean, you know that he is a very special human being.  A long-time member of PM&L Theatre in Antioch, he has delighted audiences (and his fellow cast members) with his talent, his positive spirit, and sense of whimsy.  Along with being a “triple-threat” performer, he plays piano and organ for both the theatre and his church, has a Master’s Degree in teaching, with a concentration (and a passion!) for middle school Science.  Dean has no enemies – he is a positive, child-at-heart yet wise spirit, who makes friends wherever he goes, adults and children alike.

He underwent surgery to remove the tumor that perforated his colon on October 12, which is when he received the cancer diagnosis. Fortunately, the surgery was successful.  But after other tests, it was discovered on October 17 that the cancer had metastasized in the liver.  As a result, Dean has begun to undergo up to 6 months of chemotherapy.

Because of this, he has been able to work only part-time, and cannot yet apply for his full teaching license with all of the expenses and time needed for his cancer treatments.   His wife Stacy has also had/has to take a great deal of time off work, some of it unpaid, in order to support Dean through surgery and chemo treatments.  They were hit with two $5,000 deductible payments within the last few months, along with other bills and lost pay.  The family’s money is getting tighter and tighter, and they need our help.  (They didn’t ask – we offered.)

Dean is one of the most selfless and truly kind people I have ever met.  He volunteers a large portion of his time and talent at the theatre and at church (along with Stacy and Nathan), and would give both his family and his friends all that he is capable of.

Now, it's time that we give back some of that love and support to Dean.  Anything you can donate – whether it’s $5 or $100 -- will be truly appreciated.  Everything we can do to help them and surround Dean and the Griffiths family with love is what is most important so he can focus on beating this thing.  Please spread the word.

We, Dean’s friends, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. <3

Hello all! This is Stacy. I wanted to thank each and every one of you for your assistance earlier this year. We are so humbled and grateful to you all. Unfortunately, we have fallen on hard times again, and so I am reaching out for assistance again.

Dean is still undergoing chemotherapy, but with some changes. His last PET scan showed that all but two of the lesions on his liver have healed, but the two that remain have grown in size. So his oncologist has switched him to an immunotherapy-type of medication, in addition to starting oral chemo meds. The new infusions have to be given via IV, as he had his chemo port removed due to a blood clot in his arm. The oral meds have caused other side effects due to the meds going through his digestive system instead of being pumped into his bloodstream. He has had an initial appointment with a radiation oncologist, but he is currently in a holding pattern with that as his care team discusses possible options.

As if all of this wasn't enough, I lost my job in July due to a mass layoff. I have been searching and applying for a full time job since the layoff, but haven't received any bites until today, when I received a call from a recruiter for a temp-to-perm position. If all goes well, I should be starting sometime next week, but our needs are immediate.

While our initial campaign covered Dean's deductibles for 2017 and 2018, he still has an out of pocket amount of $2500. With me being out of work, we have been relying on unemployment and Dean's part time job to pay for our monthly expenses and Dean's medical bills, but we have now reached a point of desperation.

We are asking for your help in raising this extra $2500, either financially or by sharing this campaign, so Dean can continue to receive the treatment he needs in order to fight cancer. As always, thank you for all of the love and support you've given us so far, and thank you in advance for any further assistance you can provide. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful group of friends and family surrounding us. :)

Hi everyone! We are only $350 away from reaching this goal for Dean and family - I know we can do this! You have all been so generous - please share in case we have missed a friend who might want to help. I asked Dean’s wife for an update on how he is doing, and here’s what she told me:

Dean had his fifth chemo treatment March 5. If we look at the low estimate of chemo rounds, he is more than halfway through. If we look on the high end, he has six more to go. We won’t know for sure until Dean gets his PET scan so his cancer can be restaged. We are hoping he can get the scan next week, but because he’s on an insulin pump, he has a gajillion hoops he needs to jump through that have already cancelled one scan while we were at the hospital and cancelled several others because his blood sugar was wonky. Diabetes is turning into a massive monkey wrench when it comes to these scans...

The side effects of chemo seems to be getting worse with each round. This last round was so bad that Dean had to call in to work on the second day of his pump schedule due to the nausea. Once he eats something, he feels much better, but the nausea makes it difficult for him to eat anything. It's a horrible catch 22. The cold neuropathy has been an ongoing issue as well with the weather changes. I got him some writers' gloves in the hopes that he can get some relief from the tingling sensation while he's playing piano/organ at church services...

That’s where we stand right now. Dean has his next round of chemo on Monday, so he'll be spending the better part of the day at Condell getting his infusion, then he'll be on the chemo pump until Wednesday. The good news is that aside from the cold neuropathy, most of the side effects tend to go away within a few hours of the pump disconnect. The neuropathy hangs around for about a week, which isn’t awesome when it comes to Midwestern winters, but Dean doesn’t complain about it too much. He continues to amaze me with his positive attitude and kick ass spirit...
