Meet Freckles, the sweetest puppy you could ever know.
Freckles is an American Bulldog mix that was adopted from a no-kill animal shelter after several months of waiting for his forever home. Along with a big heart, Freckles came with several medical concerns and a history of poor health and suffering. With a little love, and lots of peanut butter treats, he has become a healthier, happier part of our family.
Unfortunately, Freckles now faces his most serious health concern yet, and we need help.
Freckles has a serious staph infection inside his left ear canal that has become antibiotic resistant. Staph infections can be deadly, leading to pneumonia, heart failure, or Septic arthritis if left untreated. After a long course of antibiotics, the only treatment now is the surgical route. His infected ear canal will need to be opened up and the infected tissue will be removed. This will hopefully stop the spread of the infection and prevent the staph from coming back.
Due to the contagious and dangerous nature of a staph infection, Freckles needs treatment as soon as possible. Estimates from several veterinary surgical clinics estimate the costs to be between $1500 and $1700. This covers the cost of the immediate surgery. Unfortunately, this is more than we can afford in such a short time scale, and time is running out quickly.
We hope to be able to raise a significant portion of the costs to help cover the surgery, medication, and any after care that he will require as he heals. We know that recovering from a medical procedure like this will be costly and time consuming, but with help we also know that Freckles can live a long and happy life.

1. Why is the surgery so expensive?
Freckles had a Total Ear Canal Ablation (TECA) some time in the past, an expensive operation in which in inner ear is removed and sealed shut. There is a small chance with these types of operations that an infection can set in in the ear, and it seems Freckles is one of the unlucky few. The veterinarians will need to reopen the ear canal and remove whatever tissue is left inside that is causing the infection. As it is unknown who performed the original surgery, or even how long ago it was performed, this makes his current need even more compicated. The costs for this type of surgery are already high, but going in when there is little known about what might be found can increase the costs.
2. Have you tried using Care Credit/emergency
credit?
We have applied for several credit options to help cover these expenses, however we have been denied.
3. Can donations be made directly to the veterinarians doing the surgery?
Freckles will be having his surgery done at Veterinary Surgical Solutions. You can call them at (512) [phone redacted] Monday - Thursday, from 7AM-5PM to make a direct donation. The donations are for Freckles Sawyer/Carleton Sawyer.
