CAMPAIGN ENDED - File770 Upgrade
This campaign is now ended. Please do not donate any more through this site. If you wish to contribute, please contact me by clicking the envelope icon next to my name (JJ).
Due to illness, Mike Glyer, editor of the speculative fiction fanzine File770, was not able to attend Worldcon to receive two Hugo Awards this year.
Mike is currently working on a beat-up first-generation Kindle, which is not terribly usable for posting to the blog -- whether it's from a con, or from a hospital.
Because Mike has done such a great job creating a community where Filers can share book reviews, filks, general commentary, and their love of the SFF genre, several Filers have suggested that we sponsor a System Upgrade for him.
We'll be taking suggestions for what sort of replacement device to buy, once we see what sort of budget we have to work with.
If you are able to contribute, great! If you are able to offer best wishes for a speedy recovery, those are much welcomed, too.
I am closing this campaign down now.
I'd just like to thank all of you for your immense generosity, in providing Mike with a new Kindle Oasis, a new Dell XPS 15 laptop, and various accessories -- as well as a fair bit over and beyond that, which he can use to defray expenses incurred during the last month.
All packages have now been received by Mike, and the extra funds have been transferred to the Glyers -- along with the good wishes you have all included on your donations.
Thanks again for giving back, to someone who has given so much to all of us in providing a lively, friendly, thoughtful community where we can share and interact with each other.
His upgraded tech has been shipped. There is a substantial amount of additional funds beyond the goal, which will be forwarded to Diana for the Glyers to use as they see fit, as soon as I can make arrangements with her.
The latest news is that Mike is doing better, and will hopefully be coming home on 5 September.
Thanks once again to all of you for your generosity and love for Mike.
The almost-as-good news is that you have all been so generous, that we have not only provided him with a brand-spanking-new Kindle Oasis, but that we are only about $300 away from being able to provide him with a Dell XPS 15 9550-4444SLV Signature Edition Laptop, with 15.6-inch 4K UHD touchscreen, Intel Core i7-6700HQ, 16GB memory/512GB SSD, Up to 10 hours battery life, 1-year subscription to Office 365, and 2-year warranty providing support and repair or replacement for defects, malfunctions, and accidental breakage.
He will be able to use this laptop to maintain File770 from panel rooms or his hotel room at conventions, rather than attempting to use the cumbersome Kindle by wi-fi or the hotel's business center computer for updates.
Again, if you have not provided signal boost for this campaign on social media, please consider doing so.
Thank you all so much again for your immense generosity.
Thanks to you, an Amazon Kindle Oasis is on its way to Mike and should arrive on or before Friday.
Your generosity has now also benefited the SJW Credential Rescue organization through the Amazon Smile program,
and fan-run SFF book database site WorldsWithoutEnd through the Amazon referrer program.
In addition to that, we're going to get him some sort of portable laptop with a good-sized keyboard that he can use to update File770 when he's away from home.
Ideal characteristics are:
- good-sized screen and good resolution
- good-sized, solid keyboard
- enough processor and memory to run MS Office products
Right now, I am looking at the following which are all 5 pounds or under:
Asus ZenBook Pro UX501VW-DS71T
ASUS Zenbook UX301LA-XH72T
Asus Zenbook UX303UB
Dell Inspiron i7559-7512GRY
Microsoft Surface Pro 4 TH4
If you have any feedback (good or bad) on these models, or suggestions for another appropriate device, please hit "Reply" on this notification e-mail and let me know.
Thanks again to all of you, for your generosity.
