Feeling-at-Home Places exhibition

Hello there.  My name's Elaine Cusack and I'm a writer based in Whitley Bay, UK. I'm fundraising on behalf of Bulgarian photographer Rossena Petcova  and her forthcoming exhibition here on Tyneside this summer. That's Rossena in the main photo, connecting with the North East coast's landscape.

I met Rossena when she volunteered during 2016's Newcastle Photography Festival. I was impressed by her photos and by her professionalism. She took photos of my family made us all feel at ease.

We  kept in touch when she returned to Sofia in December 2016. I encouraged Rossena to exhibit her work in England. Her first solo exhibition takes place this July on Tyneside. Details will be revealed soon.

I think Rossena's photos are magical and moving. I've named the photos of her embedded in her surroundings  "Selfless Selfies." What do you think?

Here is Rossena to tell you more about the forthcoming exhibition called Feeling-at-Home Places.

"My name is Rossena and I am from Sofia, Bulgaria. I think I have always had photography in me but I found my passion for it while I was an Erasmus student at Brera Art Academy, Milan five years ago. From that moment on I haven’t stopped learning and immersing myself in photography.

My work, largely inspired by my travels, expresses a fascination with the places I visit and the people I meet. I like people very much, I like to observe them in order to capture something that I consider interesting or special about them, intimate moments in which we stay a bit vulnerable without the usual mask.

Photographing urban spaces and landscapes of our time is another strong interest of mine, I like the human figure in the landscape very much. Exhibiting my photographs invites the viewer to contemplate the images with me.

I spent almost two years (2015/16) living between Bulgaria and the North East areas of the UK, Newcastle upon Tyne and the nearby coast. I started experimenting with the self image, the documentary portrait and the landscape around me. Now I have the opportunity to show the photographs, organising my first solo exhibition on Tyneside in July2018.

The title of the project is Feeling-at-home Places  and is  divided into two parts. The first one includes portraits of people living in the North East England and the second one includes autobiographical self-portraits and landscapes.

The first solo exhibition is an important event for every artist and I  hope you will help me with the costs.  Financial support at any level would be greatly appreciated. I have estimated the minimal costs at about £600 covering printing, travelling and accommodation.

The money will be used for printing of the selected twenty photographs on photographic paper and hopefully buying frames (£300/350), travel costs Sofia-Newcastle-Sofia (£200), accommodation (£100) for one week during the opening of the exhibition week as well as printing some advertising materials for the exhibition.

I have a special gift for everyone who makes a contribution over £50. I am giving a print of one of the exhibition photographs. The print will be size A4 30/20 cm on photographic paper, signed and numbered (10 copies are available of each photograph), and ready to be framed. You can choose the one you like.
Thank you,  Rossena Petcova.
