PRUDHVI RAJ KANDEPI - A Fallen Angel!

Very rarely do we come across people who have an amazing impact on others, touch their lives and make an everlasting impression.

Prudhvi Raj Kandepi, aged 25 and the only son to his parents was one of those rarest gems. A graduate of University of California-Riverside and Vellore Institute of Technology, India (VIT), he was a beautiful soul and a very happy person who got along with everyone. He spread cheer, excitement and enthusiasm, his smile was contagious and his eyes were full of dreams. Prudhvi traveled far and worked extremely hard so he can provide a better life for his parents and younger sister. However, all those aspirations and dreams were shattered in a senseless act of gun violence at Fifth Third Center in Cincinnati on Thursday, September 6, 2018. His parents, relatives, friends and well wishers are beyond shock and in deep despair.

Tarangini, a non-profit Telugu association of Cincinnati, is coordinating with local officials, TANA, VIT Alumni Association (VITAA USA) and his family members to get Prudhvi home. However, our responsibility just does not end there. We are reaching out to everyone for moral and monetary assistance in such a difficult time. All funds raised will go directly to his parents. Our gratitude goes to everyone that have been reaching out to help. Please pass on this message to your near and dear so we can maximize our efforts in helping Prudhvi’s family.

Prudhvi was given his last rites on 9/12/2018 in our home town of Tenali, India. Though we still cannot make any sense of this tragedy, the outpouring support from folks like you across the world is giving us the strength and courage to move forward. While it is the worst nightmare for any parent to lose their child, it is even more difficult when that child is thousands of miles away from you; totally uncertain as to what was going on and how we would get our son back.

It was midnight local time, and I was in a train travelling back home from a business trip, when I received the call on 9/6/2018. I was not sure what to make of it and was desperately praying for it to be just a bad dream. However, the reality started to sink in and an emptiness took over. With no one to share the grief in that moment, and not sure what to do next, the remaining 8 hours of that train journey were the worst moments of my life. I sincerely pray to god that no parent would ever have to go through anything remote like that. On one hand, I was absolutely horrified with the thought of breaking this news to my wife and daughter, and on the other, I was not sure if or when and how would we even get a chance to see Prudhvi. However, with the selfless efforts of countless people, we were able to get Prudhvi back with great respect, love and care, which I believe will help us bring some closure. Our family will always be indebted to you for your kindness. Please accept our heartfelt gratitude for your efforts, contributions and condolences.

We humbly request you to keep Richard Newcomer and Luis Filipe Calderon, who also lost their lives in this tragedy, in your thoughts and prayers. From the bottom of our hearts, we wish Whitney Austin and Brian Sarver a speedy recovery. God bless you all!

Gopinath Kandepi,
Prudhvi’s father.

Our sincere gratitude to each one of you for your contributions as well as condolences. This unexpected tragedy has been devastating to our family, but the outpouring support and strength we received from the thousands of you will help us heal. An evil act of cowardice took Prudhvi away from us, but the acts of kindness and support from people like you will help restore our faith in humanity. We have nothing to repay your selfless act of kindness, but we pray that the Almighty God bless you abundantly.
We would also like to thank everyone that was involved in getting our son home with utmost respect, love and care.
