Garrett Fagan Memorial Scholarship

In March of 2017, Garrett G. Fagan passed away. He left us far too early, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Garrett will always be remembered as an influential mentor, an inspiring teacher, a supportive colleague, a loving father, and a fierce friend, and for this reason, we've decided to establish a scholarship in Garrett's name for the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome.
With this scholarship we hope to honor and to carry on the memory of our colleague Garrett and the academic and humanist values that he held dear. The 2015-2016 academic year during which he was Professor in Charge was Garrett’s first year at the Centro. Even so, he already embodied and championed the values that the program aims to instill in its students: genuine curiosity and boundless inquisitiveness; scholarly and intellectual tenacity; hard work and diligence; honesty and responsibility; and above all, friendship, community, sincere care and concern for all those around him, and, of course, a boundless sense of humor. Garrett displayed these values unflaggingly throughout months of faculty planning in the hot Italian summer, day-long site visits, rigorous lectures, and even outside of the classroom, over dinners, poker games, and long conversations with students and faculty alike. He held others to the same high standard; without a doubt, those of us who worked and studied with him are the better for it.
Garrett often spoke of his first trip to Rome, when he was twelve years old with his father. His first encounters with the monuments and memories of the ancient world truly inspired him, and this initial spark of inspiration continued to suffuse his lectures and lessons so many years later. Garrett’s enthusiasm remained so ardent that not even Roman spring hailstorms could dampen it, and his sense of wonder was infectious. He was an example to all of us, in both the care and precision with which he conducted his scholarship and the support and dedication he showed to colleagues and students. For Garrett, the study of the ancient world was not merely an intellectual pursuit, but a humanist way of life, and his values and dedication influenced everyone who worked or studied with him that year.
The ICCS strives to send the best qualified students to Rome regardless of their ability to pay, and has met 100% of student need (as demonstrated by a FAFSA form) in the past two semesters. While the ICCS has a growing number of generously endowed scholarships, the program still pays for most student aid out of operating expenses. The Garrett G. Fagan Memorial Scholarship will provide financial support that will allow a deserving student to spend a semester at the ICCS. In this way, this scholarship will create an opportunity for a student who otherwise might not be able to benefit from what is without hyperbole a life-changing academic and personal experience.
By establishing this scholarship, we hope not only to honor Garrett’s memory but moreover to perpetuate it, enabling future generations of Centristi to experience the city, culture, and history that Garrett so passionately embraced and pursued. We remember his enthusiasm, his humor, his humanism, his friendship, and his mentorship, today and always.
