A Place To Call Home....

Tax deductible

My name is Dr. Michael Rubenstein and providing neurological care and education in Northern Tanzania has become a passion of mine that has been realized over the last several years. We now have a permanent residence that is nearing completion and will be in need of furnishings by our next visit in March 2017 and we can use your help to make this dream a reality.

With the assistance of The Foundation for African Medicine and Education www.fameafrica.org (FAME), I have spent the last six years developing a program that now provides neurological care on a recurring basis every six months and also serves as a global health educational training program for neurology residents from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Tanzania is a country of over 50 million people where neurological care does not exist outside of the capital city and is inaccessible for all but a few of its residents. Patients often come from the far reaches of the country to attend our semi-annual neurology clinics, sometimes traveling a day or more by bus just to be seen. Currently, six residents annually accompany me to FAME where we provide care to 500+ neurology patients each year with follow up visits in between conducted by the FAME clinicians utilizing the internet to contact us for questions regarding care.

One year ago, a dream of mine, to obtain funding for a more permanent residence for our program, became a reality when a generous donor agreed to fund a volunteer house on the grounds of FAME primarily for our use during visits there. The house is now nearly complete and we are ready to furnish it to be ready for our next visit in March 2017. The additional funding will allow us to purchase necessities such as furniture, bedding, linens and kitchen supplies for this modest multi-bedroom volunteer house. The “Raynes House” will be a permanent home for the Penn Neurology Global Health program that will continue to provide this very necessary and otherwise unobtainable neurology care and education for the citizens and medical doctors of Tanzania for years to come. Your generous contributions will enable us to contiue this valuable work that has made such a difference for so many Tanzanians in need of this specialty care in a country where access to this health care is so limited. Together we can all make a difference!

Asante Sana! (Thank you very much in Swahili),

Dr. Mike
