"Evolutionary Blues... West Oakland's Music Legacy" screens at the Rwanda Film Festival this month. On Sunday, October 21, 2018, the film has been nominated to receive an award for  "Best Diaspora Documentary" by the African Movie Academy Awards  (AMAA).

In this campaign, SWFCenter fundraises for the plane ticket that gets Cheryl from Oakland to Rwanda and back.  We need to purchase this ticket near the first week in October. This is a wonderful opportunity for Oakland to share itself with Rwanda. It's a chance to introduce Oakland's music legacy to an African audience. It's also a chance to reveal the racial politics of Post World War II Oakland, but most importantly, this is an opportunity to demonstrate the resilience of Oakland's African American community.

We are a plane ticket away, please help us get there!

Well... The head of the Tanzanian Publishing House and former attache to the Tanzanian Embassy in DC has invited me to bring the film Evolutionary Blues... to Tanzania while I'm in Rwanda. If I get there, he'll organize the screening/discussion. We are gaining support on Facebook and in this Go Fund Me campaign .

It looks like all things are pointing to go! In addition to this amazing opportunity, the film is receiving an award at Partners in Preservation (PIP) in Oakland for its preservation of this bit of Oakland History and I've just been told that we are at Mill Valley Film Festival this year at Sweetwater on October 11th 6:00 pm with The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol performing after the screening!
