Eva's Surgery Fund

On January 8th, 2015, Eva was diagnosed with Luxating Patella in her left rear leg.

Luxating Patella is a condition in dogs where the patella (kneecap) dislocates. LP is diagnosed in grades of 1 through 4, with 4 being the most severe. Eva's is between a 2 and a 3, according to her vet. Her kneecap will slip out of place (during strenuous activities and sometimes when she is just walking around) and it can either be pushed back in place manually by us, or it will normally correct itself once she relaxes her leg. Until then, she will limp, using her other three legs for support.

Surgery is not always necessary in a lower grade case of LP, but since hers is more severe (currently popping it out a few times per day) she will need surgery in order to ensure that she will not develop any other conditions later in life as a result. If she does not have surgery, she will very likely develop osteoarthritis in the affected knee, and could stop using that leg altogether.

The need for this surgery is real, and we will do everything in our power to make it possible so that Eva will have the best quality of life going forward. However, although we have the means to care for Eva and give her regular veterinary care, we did not expect her to need an $1800-$3600 surgery (she's not even a year old!). We will make it happen no matter what, but anything you can offer will help us more than you know!

We will update soon with more info on the surgery and when we decide on a date for it. Our vet believes it would be best for us to wait a few months until Eva is at least a year old, unless her condition worsens before then.  Once we decide we are ready to get it done, we will speak with Eva's vet who will consult with the surgeon for us to get an accurate cost estimate (the vet told us it will be between $1800-$3600, plus aftercare visits) and to get a rundown of how the whole procedure will go. When that happens, we will provide contact info for those who would prefer to give directly to our vet.

A little bit about Eva:

Eva was born somewhere in Puerto Rico in late March 2014. When a group of construction workers found her wandering around their construction site, they contacted a woman named Gloria who runs a rescue group aimed at saving the stray dogs ("satos") of Puerto Rico. This group, Save A Sato , then transported Eva up to the US, where she would be more likely to find her forever home. In July 2014, my fiance and I drove an hour and a half to meet her at Danbury Animal Welfare Society (DAWS ) in Danbury, CT. The rest is history! Eva is now in her forever home with myself (Kira), my fiance (Eddie) and our two cats (Monti & Lily) in a cozy apartment in upstate New York.
