Empower Emily

Emily Lowe is a beautiful, twelve year old girl who has been disabled since birth, however has only recently had a diagnosis to explain her condition.  It is an extremely rare genetic disorder with less than 50 people worldwide affected by it.  This condition means that Emily has a number of complex difficulties, including global delay and epilepsy.  She has a continual, uncontrollable tremor, which along with her low tone (weak and floppy muscles), makes purposeful movement extremely difficult.  Therefore, Emily cannot talk, sit, walk, dress, bathe, feed or in fact complete any task, unaided.  She also suffers from scoliosis, osteopenia and feeding difficulties.

Due to her inability to communicate either verbally or through signing, Emily finds it almost impossible to express her thoughts and wishes.  She is completely reliant on others 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.   In order to improve Emily’s quality of life, we are determined to develop her ability to communicate.  This will obviously not be an easy task and will require the support of specialists as well as the purchase of some life changing technology.  As yet, we are undecided as to exactly what this piece of equipment will be, however the type of communicators which we are looking at cost approximately £8000 and assessment of communication and interaction skills may also be very costly.

Hopefully with the purchase of equipment, along with advice and support from highly qualified specialists, Emily will be able to interact more purposefully with her family and friends, enabling her to have a voice.
