Emily Nicholson (Rhodes) Fundraiser

A lot of you have been following the story of local Mandurah resident Emily Nicholson (Rhodes), aged 21.

Emily who moved with her family to Australia about four years ago, had been fit and healthy with a good job until she suddenly suffered a seizure last year.

Whilst undergoing tests Emily suffered a further two seizures over a period of a few weeks, then finally received the unfortunate results.  She was diagnosed with Astroglyoma GMB Stage 3 Wild gene, and had radiotherapy and chemotherapy every day for six weeks before doctors operated.

The surgeons were unable to remove the whole tumour, and it has since continued to grow. The family was told it was incurable on Friday, January 13 and she has been given 12 to 18 months to live.

The surgeons further advised that she would need to undergo a further operation in order to prolong her life, but carries the risk of leaving her severely disabled.

Emily had hoped to delay the operation until after her planned wedding to her fiancé Jamie Smith, which is scheduled for February 26, but her mother Joanne said yesterday that her surgeon had rung to say the surgery needed to be brought forward.

“They have decided that even though she’s had chemo, the growth of the tumour is so aggressive that she needs it ASAP,” Joanne said.

Thankfully she has come out of that surgery on Friday 3rd February without any major complications and will be home soon to recuperate and continue the plans for her pending wedding.

With her ongoing recovery and rehabilitation come the associated costs of travel, medication and of course no income whilst she is unable to work.

Then there is the associated expense of Emily & Jamie's wedding which they are hoping will be able to proceed in March.

Family and friends are also fundraising in the UK to try and bring Emily, Jamie and family home for a honeymoon visit.
