Elliot's new wheels
Donation protected
Elliot was diagnosed when he was 3 with severe Autism, Hyper-mobility, developmental delay, PICA, Sleep issues and depth perception/proprioception issues.
Elliot is 6 years old now with a developmental age of a 12-18 month old.
His autism effects all areas of his development and his communication and social skills. Elliot doesn’t use language to communicate, he is non verbal. He has hyper mobile joints. Sensory issues to touch, taste and light which cause him to have sensory overloads.
At home Elliot cant express his needs. He has no awareness of danger. He doesn’t understand my questions or instructions. At home he needs constantly watching and needs supervision at all times. He needs lots of help and support with all daily routines and activities. Elliot has no self help skills at all. He is still in nappies, can't dress himself and needs help with washing ect.
Elliot's Autism has had a massive impact on family life. We have to plan the day ahead and there is certain places we can't go as he can walk but refuses too. If we visit a place he doesn’t like and he cant cope he will have a sensory overload. Lots of times we have cut days out short because he can't cope with the environment and there is no safe space for him to have his meltdown.
His brother and sister both get fed up at times a having to have such a strict routine for him. He chews their homework and books if they leave it out. They can't leave any toys with small pieces out. Sometimes if Elliot's having a meltdown I cant spend much time with them, this makes me feel very sad.
Out in the garden the children play and Elliot just paces up and down repetitively studying the fence panels and he tries to eat things in the garden so cant be left unattended for a moment there either. Everywhere has to be safe and secure so he cant get out.
I struggle when out and about. He runs off or drops to the floor. If I was to shout his name or tell him to come back he wouldn't. He needs supervision when going up steps and support and sometimes needs carrying coming down. He is noise sensitive and becomes very upset with any new unfamiliar noise. He has difficulties coping with crowds and busy public places so needs a buggy like this for comfort and security. When he has a sensory overload he starts off by getting very frustrated and can hit, bite, kick, and drop to the ground screaming. There are many things we cant do now as a family and many places we just cant go.
The buggy I am raising funds for is different from any special needs buggy I have looked at, it is light weight, it has different wheels for the beach, a different wheel for walks and an attachment for the back of a bike so it converts into a trailer.
For 2 years now we have been unable to go out as a family for our long walks, trips to the beach and our family bike rides which we all used to love going on. Myself and Elliot tend to stay at home, it would be so nice to be able to go for walks and family bike rides again as we are keen bikers. I felt getting this buggy which would adapt to the trip out would be amazing for Elliot and the whole family as he would be able to join in activities and do things which his brother and sister do.
Delichon's Delta special needs buggy is lightweight a three-wheel special needs all-terrain buggy which offers off road capabilities, making woodland walks with the family, beaches and country paths accessible, which haven't been up to now. It also converts into a trailer so I can finally take him on our family bike rides. This buggy is suitable for Elliots age and size and will aid in his development. A buggy like this would help make a difference to how we can help him access all sorts of activities and enjoy himself with all of his family!
