DONATE $22 DOLLARS TODAY CAMPAIGN
WHO ARE WE?
We are the Veterans Suicide Prevention Channel (VSPChannel), a nonprofit organization and online channel founded specifically to fight suicide in the American veterans community. 22 veterans a day commit suicide! Our approach to de-escalating veteran suicides is to produce and broadcast shows that promote emotional, mental and physical wellness to veterans and their family members 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, that can be accessed in the privacy of their own homes.
What is the DONATE $22 DOLLARS TODAY! campaign?
We want a million people to donate $22.00 to help us to build a broadcast production studio for veterans in Texas to save veteran lives.
In 2015, I visited my sister, Stephanie in Louisiana. She is a retired US Marine Corps veteran. Stephanie has family pets; two cute little dogs. It was there that I learned something that changed my life forever. Her dogs have their own television channel. It was mind blowing to realize that although pets have their own television broadcast, veterans did not. This knowledge put me on the path to create a channel for veterans that could promote good physical health and emotional and mental well-being for them in the privacy of their own homes. Hence, the launch of the VSPChannel.
The VSPChannel is working to create a powerful channel for veterans that can not only create hundreds of powerful shows, employ many veterans, but be there for them in their hour or moment of need when thoughts of suicide become a powerful impulse as something they should do. This will be a state of the art production and broadcast studio facility in central Texas that can facilitate the creation of potentially life saving shows for years to come.
WE NEED YOUR $22 DOLLARS TODAY!
Just $22 dollars a day can make a difference. A dollar for each veteran who may take their own life could be a dollar to save a veteran's life.
The creation of a channel such as ours requires much planning and professional personel to get it started. The key to getting all of that into place is funding and lots of it. It takes an enormous amount of money to run a channel effectively. The VSPChannel does not qualify for many government grants because of its uniqueness in serving our veterans. VSPChannel shows are produced and broadcasted to veterans and their family members via the internet. Government grants usually require reporting of specific details to determine the proficiency of the program such as, how many veterans did your program help in specific areas: i.e., employment, housing, etc, and documentation of those veterans to whom those services were provided.
Anonymity is an important facet of our channel because there are many veterans that will not go to the VA to seek help because of the stigma attached to mental and emotional illness. We are trying to get a million people to donate $22.00 to the VSPChannel which would provide enough funds to build our broadcast/production studio and begin turning out relevant and pertinent programs and shows.
WHY THIS CHANNEL IS IMPORTANT?
As founder and chairman of the VSPChannel, I am a veteran who suffers with PTSD and who once considered suicide. However, I considered what it would do to those who were my friends and family members if I did commit suicide. That was before I discovered what was wrong with me, before I learned that I suffer the symptoms of PTSD. As a Vietnam veteran, when I first got out of the military, PTSD did not exist as a medical term. We were simply thought to be crazy.
Since 2008, I have participated in many PTSD mental health groups at the VA, starting off in the downtown Los Angeles Ambulatory medical center where I was admitted into their PRRC program for veterans like myself with suicide ideation. I was there from 2008 until 2013 and met many veterans and their family members. As I sat in these groups, I heard countless stories of men and women suffering with PTSD and even know of some in those groups that did not make it because they still took their own lives despite attempts to save them. If you could see and hear these men and women, you would know what I know now.
Veterans are very special people and I became friends with many of them. When we lose a veteran to suicide it is awful, not only for those that knew them but for those who care. That is why I want to build this channel because I know that it can save veteran lives. When that thought comes in the middle of the night and there is no other place to turn, I want the VSPChannel to be there telling veterans, "You are special. Don't harm yourself. We care. Stay here and feel better. We value you."
Saving Veterans Lives is the Ultimate goal for the VSPChannel.
I thank each and every one of you who donates to this cause. I am thankfull because the VSPChannel is not a project that will give life for today or tomorrow or a year. We have the ability to save and change the lives of veterans and their family members for years to come by providing wellness videos, veteran service organization information, benefit and referral information and much more.
I lost a child to suicide, my daughter LaTawnya Towery.
A parent should never have to bury their child because they committed suicide. I am thankful that the VSPChannel may be able to spare a veteran family member the grief associated with the loss of a loved one. Your donation of $22 dollars today could help save a veteran's life!
