Hello! My name is David Ybanez, Jr. and I’m the proud father of seven children. On August 2, 2007 my youngest son, Dempsey Ybañez, was born with Hirschsprung’s disease which rendered his intestines to not function properly. Just 7 pounds, he was immediately taken into surgery for a life-saving operation. My wife and I thank God that he survived and was able to be taken home after many weeks in the hospital.
Since then Dempsey has had surgery after surgery -- seven in all and some of them lasting over 12 hours -- to try and correct the problem. Unfortunately, the problem persisted and a few years ago the doctors told us that nothing else could be done until he was older. This was mainly to allow the scar tissue to subside. Fast forward two years, Dempsey is now 8 years old. The older he gets, the more self-conscious he is about wearing a colostomy bag.
A few days ago, the insurance finally approved his eighth (and hopefully, his final) surgery.
On June 10th 2016, he will bravely face surgery at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio -- a hospital that is world-renowned for this highly-specialized operation.
The recovery will be one to two months and is the reason for this GoFundMe campaign. Our family is humbly asking for donations to help cover travel expenses, room and board and any additional treatments for Dempsey. I’m doing everything I can to keep costs down including staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Here are some details about how the money will be spent:
Airfare ~$1,920
Housing ~$3,100
Food ~$2,000
Transportation ~$380
Misc. Medical Expenses ~$2,600
Any funds not spent in Ohio will be put towards medical bills.
Due to the surgery date being so soon, we are in need of the funds right away.
Dempsey is a sweet boy. He is quick to laugh and is always smiling. I’ve never seen such a happy child and his positive spirit is an inspiration to everyone he meets -- despite his health challenges. He’s about to enter the fourth grade! He’s growing up quickly and is dreaming of starting his first day of school being able to walk through the doors not having to wear loose clothing (to conceal his bag) and to play freely without worrying about causing himself damage. We are leaving the outcome of the surgery in God’s hands. May His will be done. Our dream is to see our son running and playing freely. And to be frank, to be able to use the restroom like you and I do on a daily basis -- something we take for granted, something he’s been unable to do.
We will be thankful for any amount we’re able to raise. Please keep Dempsey in your prayers -- especially on June 10th.
God bless you!
Sincerely,
David Ybanez, Jr.
