Demolition of Horse Slaughter Plant

Spende geschützt
The Dallas Crown processing plant, located within the city limits of Kaufman, Texas stands as a grim greeting to all coming into our city on Highway 175 from Dallas. This plant bought and processed horses for meat starting in the 70's. Local residents complained about this inhospitable neighbor: smells, sounds, and code violations. Activists across the country and around the world complained about the action itself, while local horse owners feared for stolen animals.

Meanwhile, a few streets over on Washington Street, First Baptist Church Kaufman  was growing and started looking for property where they could prepare for the future of their community. The only property large enough for a new campus inside the city limits was located on Fair Road - next door to Dallas Crown. After months of prayer and consideration, the church bought this land in 2006 believing that the plant would close. As they prayed and planned,  Dallas Crown shut down their operations due to federal and state rulings prohibiting slaughter of horses for human consumption. Meanwhile, FBC Kaufman grew onward. The Porch, a recreation and spiritual foundations center for the teenagers of Kaufman county, was completed in 2010, and construction on the Beth James Children's Building started in 2014.

The Dallas Crown facility has remained a vacant neighbor since 2007. The tall metal fence, chained gates, and decaying metal buildings are an embarrassment to our city and state. After years of negotiations, the foreignly held property (buildings and 3.1 acres) was offered to FBC Kaufman. The church raised the money and the sale was completed in July with the hope that funds could be raised to remove an ugly eyesore that, for some, is a painful reminder of the past.

FBC Kaufman has a vision for this property that overlooks Hwy 175 as well as Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. FBC Kaufman would like to tear all the buildings down and replace them with something beautiful that would welcome new comers to the community atop the highest point in the city. The catch: it will cost approx. $110,000 to level the buildings and do necessary asbestos abatement.

Efforts are already underway to raise the money for the welcome monument…but raising money for demolition is harder. Would you you consider helping us remove the last traces of this awful legacy?

Every dollar will help us reach our goal.  All donations are tax deductible and will be given to FBC Kaufman for the horse plant demolition fund.  Please contact FBC Kaufman if you need a mailed statement of your donation.
