Bobby DeFriest, a 19-year-old hockey player, has recently been diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer. He had experienced a headache for several weeks, with no improvement after several medications from doctors. He was instructed to receive an MRI. Upon results of the MRI, doctors found a mass in the pineal gland of his brain. His symptoms got worse as time went on and after further examination, he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus (a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the cavities of the brain). He was informed he would need chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Shortly after this diagnosis, Bobby suffered a major setback. On July 13th, Bobby was at home resting and expected to start his treatments the following week when he suffered a brain hemorrhage as well as suffering from seizures. Bobby was rushed to the hospital for emergency brain surgery, before being airlifted to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

As you can imagine, the cost of medical expenses for something this serious is an issue for anyone. This fundraiser is for Bobby and his family in hopes to raise enough money to ease the financial burden that comes with such a diagnosis. Please consider making a donation to Bobby and his family. Anything possible helps, even if it is just spreading the word.

Here’s a little more about Bobby...
Robert Carter DeFriest Jr. is one of the most fun-loving and caring kids who has a positive impact on all of those who he meets. He, nor anyone, ever deserves to have to go through this process.. He has been playing hockey since he was just two years old. He has played for teams all around the country. Even winning the 5 Nations Tournament in Europe for USA Hockey. Throughout the years he has made friendships that will last a lifetime. Some he even considers family. His support system expands far beyond the hockey world. His family is very important to him, having loving parents, grandparents and amazing sisters. All in all, one of the most amazing people you'll ever meet in your life. You can ask anyone and they will agree. His smile lights up a room and his personality is a 10/10. His compassion and bravery are truly inspiring. He is a warrior to say the least. It is painful to see such an amazing person go through something this hard.

Bobby encourages all those around him to remain positive throughout this journey.

Update 7/26 on Bobby: via Bob DeFriest Sr.

Over the last 10 days, Bobby has continued to make progress daily. He had his first round of chemo last weekend, and right now his white blood cells are still high enough to not need any additional medicine to increase the number. He is now able to get out of bed and is doing 3 walks per day around the hospital floor (estimate about 300 feet per walk). He is also getting daily physical therapy. The draining of the blood and excess fluid in his brain is also going well. All the various Dr.’s are very pleased with his progress and are waiting on a room to move him out of the ICU and up to the Neurosurgery floor. That should be tomorrow or so they think. He will need to stay in the hospital until they are comfortable that his brain and body are functioning and absorbing the fluids as they should and they can remove the drain. He is continuing to have vision problems, which they have attributed to Parinaud’s syndrome. Basically his eyes can’t both focus on the same thing. Wearing an eye patch helps. The majority of the time this clears up once the pressure is gone and the tumor begins to shrink. The next scheduled round of chemo begins 8/10 and is for 5 days. Uncertain right now whether he will have been released yet and need to go back in or if he will stay hospitalized through the duration.

Through everything that has happened to him in a very short period of time, Bobby has remained strong and positive, and even retained his great sense of humor. He is also humbled and very appreciative of everything being done for him by all those who know and love him, as well as others who may not personally know him but are expressing their love and prayers for him just the same.

Once again, Mel and I and our whole extended family including Casey Katherine, want to express our deepest and most sincere gratitude to the outpouring of love, friendship, and generosity being directed to Bobby and our family.

May God Bless all of you.
